Five things we learnt from Week 11 in La Liga

Real Madrid CF v Sevilla FC - La Liga

It rained goals on a mad night at the Bernabeu

Real Madrid went from Camp Nou losers to seventh heaven as they beat Unai Emery’s Sevilla 7-3. Carlo Ancelotti described it as a “mad game” afterwards – that might even be an understatement.

There were 10 goals, 3 penalties – one missed by Ivan Rakitic as he got dizzy at the prospect of a Bernabeu hat-trick – and a second-half red card for Sevilla’s on-loan Stephane M’bia.

In total the match had 31 shots – just over one shot every three minutes. Madrid had 10 on target, with seven more wide of the mark, while the visitors even managed six on target themselves.

Imagine how much higher the score could have been if the Andalusians’ hadn’t had eight shots – including Rakitic’s penalty – miss the target.

Yoel plays the goal difference game

Not that it really matters in Spain, given teams with equal points are separated via their head-to-head records, but Celta Vigo’s Yoel played his part in keeping his sides goal difference down at Balaidos on Tuesday night.

Luis Enrique’s side were equal to Barcelona in an exciting, end-to-end first half.

They found themselves 1-0 down at the break though, and once Cesc Fabregas added an early second-half brace that was that.

It then turned into a competition between Barca – namely Lionel Messi – and Yoel.

The 25-year-old stopper emerged the winner though; he made six saves throughout the match, including five, highly impressive ones, from Messi.

Lost Che have lost their shooting boots

Valencia had as many shots as Real Madrid but ended up losing to the division’s bottom club, and at Mestalla too, you can just imagine all those white flags being waved.

Los Che’s inconsistent season hit a new low on Wednesday night when Almeria, bottom of La Liga and without a win, arrived and left with all three points.

Miroslav Djukic’s side, who have now lost three in a row, racked up 17 shots on the night, only for 10 to be hopelessly off target – shooting practice is in order perhaps.

They were sloppy with the ball too – completing only 78 percent of their passes – but changing their manager shouldn’t be an option.

Djukic only took over in the summer, and Valencia desperately need some stability for once.

Levante need to be taken seriously

Levante UD v RCD Espanyol - La Liga

While Valencia toil, their neighbours, Levante, have been on a fairly remarkable, not to mention completely under-the-radar, run which has seen them lose just once since their opening day 7-0 mauling to Barcelona. That one other defeat was in stoppage time to Real Madrid.

On Thursday night they drew 0-0 at Real Betis, who are in the bottom three, to continue a run which has seen them lose once in 10 games.

In that run they have drawn five games, winning four, but they’ve also only conceded seven – the same amount they conceded in week one.

Joaquin Caparros will be quietly happy with his work, although he won’t relax given what happened to him at Mallorca last season.

Trashorras night pass Rayo to safety

Rayo Vallecano were comfortable beaten by an Osasuna team lounging alongside them at the bottom.

Paco Jemez’s side have received plenty of notoriety in recent weeks due to his funky dress sense and the fact they took possession of Barcelona – but if they continue to waste possession, is it worth it?

Again this week, Roberto Trashorras led the passing stats in Pamplona.

The 32-year-old midfielder created six chances, completed 84 per cent of over 90 passes (71.8 percent went forward) and managed two shots on target as well

Unfortunately for all Trashorras’ work, Rayo will continue to struggle if they don’t put the round thing in the net. With eight goals scored all season, only Granada have managed less (seven), while nobody has conceded more (27).

Next up? Real Madrid in Vallecas.
