Fortnite's Mega City is already a dead hot spot, and bad design is to blame

Mega City is the pride and joy of Fortnite Chapter 4, Season 2. It exudes a futuristic Japanese theme and results from countless hours of work by Epic Games. It appears to be one of the busiest hot-drop places on the map because there is so much to see and do there. Several gamers claim that the POI is now a deserted wasteland. Seldom do players leave the Battle Bus and enter Mega City.

Given this drop spot's highly publicized, this might seem a little strange, but many people attribute it to the POI's absence of any "interiors."

It's no secret that Mega City has lost much of its appeal. It is a testimony to the previous assertion because landing there was practically tricky when Chapter 4 Season 2 first debuted, as opposed to how vacant it is currently throughout the early game.

While players from the Around area and other POIs rotate into the region, the POI nevertheless experiences much action at any match. This can also occur when The Storm shrinks around this POI during a late-game match.

Other than in these situations, the only occasion when players may be seen lingering in the area is when Highcard is defeated. Players must wait for him to show up because he spawns after the safe zone has reduced.

Once they defeat him, take the vault key (and perhaps Highcard's Havoc Suppressed Rifle), and loot the vault, they leave Mega City for good. Why is this, then? Many Reddit users claim the POI is uninteresting because of its poor design.

To illustrate, while Tilted Towers and Mega City have certain similarities, the later game had more engaging gameplay. Despite being a smaller POI, Tilted Towers has much more interior construction. Every structure was fully developed, and players could access every floor. Mega City lacks this functionality.

While the POI is beautiful in its own right, most buildings don't have any interiors. There's nothing else besides the ground/first floors and roofs. Players can only take the zipline from the ground floor to the top and back down again.

Some buildings do have more than one accessible floor, but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't provide much value. Players can only utilize walls for concealment because not all can be torn down. Below are some user comments on it.

As seen from the conversation, the first user was surprised to find unopened chests in a POI such as Mega City. Since most significant POIs and famous landmarks are looted before the mid-game can even start, this is rather weird; and it suggests that users are avoiding landing in Mega City or even in the neighborhood.

The two users after them both comment on how the absence of interiors kills the POI. It does not improve that a zipline runs through it, either. While the ziplines lead to a roof and grant players access to Grind Rails, it's not enough to impress.

One user cited The Daily Bugle as the best example of what Mega City could have been. It was a prominent POI in Fortnite Chapter 3 and was much-loved by the community. Every floor was made accessible and filled with loot.

The best part about this was that players could break the entire structure and level it if they wanted. With the ability to 'build and break' things being a core USP in Fortnite, it felt good.

Another user mentioned how the developers could make Mega City more 'explorable.' Rather than creating accessible floors, they could have added a vault in the middle of buildings. If not vaulted, Chests would have worked well. This would incentivize players to stick around in the POI after landing.

On the flip side of the argument that Mega City would be better off with accessible floors, this would result in the POI having too much loot. Furthermore, like the Daily Bugle in Fortnite Chapter 3, entire buildings can be broken down and tumbled.

Although it wouldn't necessarily be terrible, it would be aggravating and fatal for those unable to rotate to safety. Yet, considering that "building and breaking" are fundamental Fortnite gameplay, this would be reasonable.

Will Epic Games change how Mega City functions in Fortnite Chapter 4, Season 2?

Even if they wish to make these adjustments, it would not be easy because of the time and materials required. There is no way to modify immediately because POIs are created months in advance.

Mega City is expected to grow with the upcoming changes, but accessibility won't change. Nothing else will change in the typical sense other than a few new regional structures.

That said, players have two options in hand. They can either 'hot-drop' into Mega City and loot until it's time to rotate or land in POIs such as Anvil Square and Breakwater Bay to engage opponents in combat. While these aren't ideal fixes to the 'problem,' this is the best solution for now.
