ISL 2020-21

The 7th season of the Indian Super League (ISL) is perhaps the most awaited edition of the Super League. Sports across the world including India was suspended in March 2020 due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus. Indian Super League 2019-20 final was played behind closed doors in Goa. With no resumption of sporting action in the country since the virus outbreak, ISL will have a responsibility to execute a league of this magnitude with perfection amidst the fear of the virus.

Schedule

The 7th season of the ISL has already been delayed. Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) the organisers of the league have picked up the window between 21 November 2021 and 21 March 2021 as the possible timeframe to host the league. The 7th edition will be played behind closed doors in Goa due to the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic. Most teams have begun training in Goa as foreigners arrive into the state for the season. Games will be played at Fatorda Stadium; Bambolim Stadium; and Tilak Maidan in Goa.

Players are being asked to go into 7-14 day quarantine periods with 3 Coronavirus tests before they begin training with the team upon arrival in the Bio Bubble in Goa. East Bengal FC and Chennaiyin FC are the only two teams yet to arrive in the venues.

Matches

The ISL 2020-21 is slated to kick-off in November third week. It will be the second football event to be resumed in India after the I-League Qualifiers 2020-21. The ISL is expected to be played parallel to the I-League, which is also expected to resume in December in a Bio-Bubble in Kolkata. The fixtures of the Indian Super League 2020-21 is yet to be announced.

The ISL will witness some renewed rivalries as Mohun Bagan (now merged into ATK Mohun Bagan FC) and East Bengal FC will face Bengaluru FC in the ISL after parting ways in the I-League in 2017. Games between Kerala Blasters FC and East Bengal FC are also likely to turn into rivalries as both sets of fans are already engaging in pre-season banter on Social Media.

ISL 2020-21 will witness its maiden New Kolkata Derby as age-old rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal face off in a rejuvenated Kolkata Derby clash as ATK Mohun Bagan FC and SC East Bengal.

Teams

Odisha FC and Hyderabad FC will play their second season of the Indian Super League in the 2020-21 season. Odisha FC was renamed from Delhi Dynamos FC after shifting to Bhubaneshwar, Odisha from the National Capital. Hyderabad FC was formed after the closure of FC Pune City.

ATK merged into I-League side Mohun Bagan FC to form a merged entity ATK Mohun Bagan FC while East Bengal entered the league as the 11th team after getting on board their investors Shree Cements. The Red and Golds are expected to play the league as SC East Bengal.

Bengaluru FC and Jamshedpur FC will play their fourth season in the ISL. Original ISL teams like FC Goa, Mumbai CIty FC, Chennaiyin FC, Kerala Blasters FC and NorthEast United will play their 7th season in the Indian Super League.

Players

The Indian Super League has witnessed an A-League exodus. Teams have brought in players like Adam Le Fondre, Bradden Inman, Scott Neville, Gary Hooper, James Donachie and Steven Taylor from the A-League. Players like Cy Goddard, Anthony Pilkington, Luis Machado, Costa Nhamoinesu, Facundo Pereyra, Peter Hartley, Igor Angulo, Esmael Goncalves, and Cleiton Silva are other big names to have arrived to ply their trade in the Indian Super League.
