The fastest street circuit on the calendar, Jeddah will be hosting the second race of the season. The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was introduced only a couple of years ago. The race in Jeddah in the 2023 Formula 1 season was one of the best performances of Red Bull’s second driver, Sergio Perez. The event is compared to Monza, “the Temple of Speed”, due to its pacing and racing action.

Former Brawn GP managing director Ross Brawn had said: “What we want to see is a race circuit. We don’t want Mickey Mouse circuits. We don’t want those old classic street circuits with 90 degree turns. We want fast sweeping circuits, circuits which are going to challenge the drivers – and they are going to love it.”

The track was introduced with high-octane racing as a foundation. The Saudi Arabian GP is a night race which gives a festive feel to spectators along the coastline of the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabian Grand Prix History

The first Saudi Arabian GP was held during the 2021 Formula 1 season. The inaugural race was won by a charging Lewis Hamilton, who was looking forward to breaking Michael Schumacher’s record of seven World Championships. The initial plans for a Formula 1 race was to host the event in Qiddiya. As of now, Jeddah will be hosting the Saudi Arabian GP until the Qiddiya circuit is constructed.

The Saudi Arabian GP has gone through its share of problems throughout its time as an official Formula 1 event. The persistent issue of human right’s violations in Saudi Arabia has been raised multiple times.

Human Rights Watch claimed that Formula 1 was merely a distraction and it was being used to sportswash people about the crimes committed in the region. Lewis Hamilton took it upon himself to raise concerns for the LGBTQ community in Saudi Arabia. He has worn a rainbow helmet during the three races held at Jeddah to signify his support.
