The Women’s IPL is a short equivalent of the Indian Premier League for the women. A total of three teams called Trailblazers, Supernovas and Velocity in the T20 tournament contested by female cricketers from a lot of cricket-playing nations.
After the grand success of the Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia, the Women’s T20 Challenge, as it is called, might have been a bigger tournament. However, the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be an obstacle for the women’s T20 cricket.
Women’s IPL 2020 will be the third season of the Women’s T20 Challenge tournament that began in 2018. In 2018, IPL Trailblazers and IPL Supernovas were the only two participating teams and played a one-off game at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Supernovas went on to win the thriller on the last ball.
A third team called IPL Velocity was added in 2019. They faced the defending champions in the Final but it was once again the IPL Supernovas who won the game on the final ball.
The same three existing teams will be playing the 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge in Sharjah. All three teams will be playing a game each against the other two sides in the league stage. The three league stage games will be played on 4, 5 and 7 November.
The top two teams in the points table will contest the Final on 9 November at the same venue.
All the four matches of the tournament will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah.
The tournament will feature a plethora of Indian cricketers with the most renowned being Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj. These three cricketers will be leading the Supernovas, Trailblazers and Velocity respectively. Along with them will be Jemimah Rodrigues, Jhulan Goswami, Deepti Sharma, Shafali Verma and a few others.
Among foreign internationals, Danielle Wyatt, Chamari Athapaththu, Deandra Dottin, Sophie Ecclestone, Shashikala Siriwardene and Sune Luus will also be participating in the tournament. A special addition this year is the only half-centurion in Women’s T20Is from Thailand, Natthakan Chantham, who will be playing for the Trailblazers.
