Right then, the Australian team clinch the trophy 2-1 and pose with it in front of the WINNERS banner. A hard-fought contest throughout the series and now both these teams will lock horns in the ODI format with a few changes to either squads. The venue will be same for the first one-day and it will be starting in a couple of days time, 19 August (Tuesday). We will be back to bring you all that action but for now it is time for us to sign off. This is Sourabh Agrawal taking your leave on behalf of Bidipto Datta and the entire team. Cheers!
Mitchell Marsh (Australia Captain): "Nice to win the close ones in T20 cricket. Was a little bit unorthodox but pretty thankful that Maxi (Maxwell) got us over the line. (On Maxwell) He's a world-class player. He has been so flexible, he batted in 3 different positions in each game and we're just lucky to have him. He does everything and tonight he was class. (On his own runs) It is always nice to contribute to a win which is the most important thing. (On the ODI series coming up) Looking forward to it, anytime we play against South Africa it is always hard-fought and we got a lot of respect for that team. Fantastic series and we will be back here in a few days for what will be a hard series against a good team."
Aiden Markram (South Africa Captain): "Good game of cricket. Ended up on the wrong side unfortunately. Always small margins. 170 was not enough with the bat but we pretty much made it enough. Some pretty good signs with the ball, Brevis with the bat throughout the series was really good. Other hands putting their hands as well. Don't want to jinx it (on Brevis being a future superstar) but I certainly think so. Not many guys can do what he can do and he is only 22-23 and he works really hard. Fingers crossed, he has got a huge career. (On the positives from the series) The bowling thought was really good, kept improving throughout the series which is a good sign. Brevis with the bat, Stubbs had good partnerships and the other showed glimpses as well which excites you./ Plenty for us to take from the series but never great to lose."
Tim David (Player of the Series) : "I think the reason why I am standing here is because of Glenn Maxwell! He played another unbelievable innings! Always good to contribute, always good to win matches and series. We have challenges coming up of course, but we are up for them as we go along! If we play like this, we should be in good shape for the T20 World Cup."
Glenn Maxwell (Player of the Match, 62* off 36 balls and a catch) : "It did get a bit nervy, Corbin Bosch bowled really well but I guess I held my nerve and got the job done. It is important to hold my shape, important to keep things simple. This is a fun group to be with and a big win against a fine T20 side!"
11:03 PM local time (6:33 PM IST): It is now time for the post-match and the post-series presentation!
10:54 PM Local Time, 6:24 PM IST: Australia win by 2 wickets and take the 3-match series 2-1
A nail-biter of the highest quality, haven't these two teams served the fans, tonight?
Trust Maxwell to bring out the reverse sweep to a pacer with 4 needed off 2 and number 10 at the other end. Well, not only did he bring it out but also connected to seal the match as well as the series for his team. Once again, he has stood as a lone warrior for Australia and plucked out a win when it looked improbable.
He ain't called the big show for no reason, he has once again proven his worth and his value to this T20 setup. Zampa ran towards him in elation and gave him a big hug as the big show hit the winning runs.
The chase was set up by a fifty at the top from the Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh, who scored a T20 fifty for Australia after 18 months. 173 was a tricky total on a two-paced track and the bison took all the pressure off in the powerplay. He stitched a 66-run opening stand with Head where the latter struggled for timing before being dismissed on 19.
The game swung as number Josh Inglis got a second golden duck in the series. Australia lost wickets in pairs, from 83/2 to 88/4 and 120/4 to 120/6. However, Maxwell decided to take matter in his own hands from there on with Ben Dwarshuis at the other end.
He farmed the strike and struck boundaries regularly from as far as 40-odd runs needed for the win. A couple of more wickets fell towards the end as Bosch bowled a wonderful penultimate over keeping the game alive, just two leg-byes off the 19th meant Australia needed 10 off the last over with Maxwell on strike. Then, the big show did the big show things and treated the fans at Cairns with a spectacle in their first ever T20I.
19.5 Lungisani Ngidi to Glenn Maxwell, AUSTRALIA WIN! GLENN MAXWELL IS THE MATCH-WINNER TONIGHT! AUSTRALIA TAKE THE SERIES TOO. Full toss on middle-stump. Maxwell had to bring out the reverse, didn't he? He brought out the reverse shot, connected and got it to go over short third man. The fielders chased it, but eventually, the ball went on to hit the boundary cushion!
This is going down to the wire, Ngidi executes this time and it is another dot. 4 off 2, one hit or one wicket?
19.4 Lungisani Ngidi to Glenn Maxwell, really full on off-stump. Maxwell opens himself up and drills it down to long-on. But, Maxwell refuses another single.
4 off 3
Maxwell yells but doesn't get the no-ball. Once again it was a poor ball from Ngidi but he gets away, good work from Muthusamy.
19.3 Lungisani Ngidi to Glenn Maxwell, NO RUN TAKEN. FAIR DELIVERY. Full toss around off. Sliced unintentionally to the left of short third. But Muthusamy does well to stop it!
4 off 4, pressure on Ngidi now. This keeps swinging. Markram has a chat with Ngidi. What will he come up with?
19.2 Lungisani Ngidi to Glenn Maxwell, PRETORIUS WASN'T STOPPING THAT! Full around off-stump. Maxwell went deep in the crease and slapped it to deep cover to beat the sweeper to his right.
WOW! Now on the field Bosch, saves two four his team and now Australia need 8 off 5
19.1 Lungisani Ngidi to Glenn Maxwell, NOW WHAT'S HAPPENED HERE? Full on off-and-middle. Hoicked off the middle of the bat to wide long-on. Bosch does incredibly well to jump beyond the rope and pull the ball back in the field of play! TWO RUNS!
10 needed off 6 and the ball has been thrown to Lungi Ngidi [3.0-0-24-0] with Maxwell on strike
They were dead and buried but Bosch has pulled out a spectacular over out of the hat and we are now going into the final over with all the results possible.
