That's all from this milestone win for India. This is Dwaipayan Mukherjee, signing off with my commentary partner, Soumarya Dutta. We will see you soon!
Smriti Mandhana (Player of The Match) : The last couple of 100s I had gotten against Australia were in a losing cause so happy for this to get translated into a win. We wanted to capitalise on what comes in my radar. All depends on the conditions and whom are we playing. The Aussies are a great side and getting 280-290 is the bare minimum against them. The wicket was really flat so we needed to get aggressive. Depending on the conditions, we will tailor our approach. We complement each other well. She is pretty calm and composed and the same goes for me, we plan on keeping things simple which has worked for us and hoping for it to continue!
Harmanpreet Kaur (Indian Captain) : We are happy that we played good cricket and that is what we discussed in our team meetings that we must stick to doing the basics well which has unfolded good results for us. We talk about keeping things simple and clear which always provides us with breakthroughs in the middle and the key is to repeat doing that consistently. We got runs from Smriti but none of the others could go big and even then we got close to 300 so our batting certainly has depth which is always helpful. Bowlers kept on giving us opportunities. This series, we want to give chances to a lot of our bench, before the series, we spoke about giving opportunities to newer players. Happy that worked for us.
Alyssa Healy(Australia Women Captain) - We are looking to prepare for the World Cup so I think the decision at the toss wasn't really wrong. India played really well. I thought we did well to hold them back to less than 300. We wanted to go about business as usual with the bat but we failed to do so. They bowled well with the new ball. It was a good learning curve for us and hopefully we can come back stronger in the final ODI.
Arundhati Reddy (India Women) - "Really happy that we were able to step up to the task today. The batters did well again but it was up to us to do our job. We did well to take our chances and picked up the wickets regularly. The track was good for batting so I feel the batters did a fantastic job earlier on to keep the tempo. Glad that I could hold on to the crucial catches. I always look to give my best on the field."
8:32 PM Local Time : India (292 all out) defeat Australia (190 all out) by 102 runs
India have handed Australia their biggest loss in ODIs! This is a record-breaking victory for India! A combination of bowling and fielding brilliance gives India a rare win against Australia, only their 2nd in the last 15 games against this opposition! This is the first ODI loss for Australia in Indian soil since 2013! India defeat Australia in an ODI at home for the first time since 2007!
Georgia Voll had come in as a replacement for the highest run scorer in the first game for Australia, Phoebe Litchfield. However, she failed to trouble the scorers when Renuka Thakur knocked her over in the last ball of the 2nd over of the chase. Kranti Goud, who'd accounted for the Aussie captain in the opening ODI, continued her good form against Alyssa Healy as the visitors lost both their openers within the first 5 overs.
It could have been 16 for 3 had Richa Ghosh held on to a faint edge down the leg side off Beth Mooney as the haunted past of the Indian team dropping chances began to surface. At that time, Mooney had not gotten off the mark, struggling to get going in the 7th over of the innings. It was a marked difference in India's opening bowling spell between the last match and this one. No boundaries were scored for 26 balls between the 6th and the last ball of the power play. 25 for 2 is Australia women's lowest 10 over powerplay total in an ODI since the 2017 World Cup.
Mooney, when on 8, was given another reprieve in the 15th over as Harleen Deol grassed a diving opportunity at long-off with Sneh Rana being the unlucky bowler. But the spinner had the last laugh as soon as the 3rd wicket stand brought up their half century stand. It was a story of being third time lucky against Mooney for India as she hit one straight down the throat of Arundhati Reddy in the off-side boundary.
When Radha Yadav was introduced into the bowling attack in the 21st over, she had already made some fine, athletic stops at the point region. But when she dropped a tight caught and bowled chance, Harmanpreet could not help but dig her head into her hands in disbelief as Sutherland was given another life. At that time, she was on 13. Radha Yadav did redeem herself with a stunning caught and bowled at the brink of the halfway point of the stage, sending back the ever reliable Ellyse Perry for a well made 44 on a tough surface.
No boundary was hit for close to 8 overs (47 balls) between the 19th and the 27th over which stifled the chase for the visitors. The skipper took an excellent catch in the cover region to send back Annabel Sutherland who was threatening to take the game away from the Indian side, sending half of the Aussie line-up back to the hut. Kranti Goud dropped Ash Gardner in another episode of a fielding lifeline provided by Indians, the 4th such instance in the 33rd over, but Radha Yadav ensured it was not a costly miss as she pouched a mishit by Gardner in the very next over.
Things went downhill pretty soon from there as the Indians can be very proud of their efforts to restrict the Aussies. All of the bowlers used today got their names into the wickets columns in what was a collectively comprehensive performance by the home side to take this series into the decider which will be played in New Delhi on Saturday.
