This makes for even more pertinent reading now.
Reason 6 - (atleast for them reaching the final) - No Diego Forlan!
Is Bhaichung right about this? What do you guys think?
He's spoken really well in this interview - and it makes for MUST READ material
PEEP! PEEP! FULLTIME!
KOLKATA 3 - 2 MUMBAI!
A deserved win at the end - it was close till Forlan lost his head, and that will have repercussions beyond this match; Mumbai will need to win at home without their captain at their service.
The match in itself was brilliant with five great goals, a beast of a defensive performance from Lucian Goian, superb winger-fullback combo display from Sameegh Doutie and Prabir Das and an all round excellent game from Borja Fernandez.
Mumbai's talisman Sunil Chhetri had a horrible game, and he will need to step up for the second leg if they are to make something of this tie
Atletico de Kolkata, though, definitely have the upper hand.
That's it from me, Anirudh Menon, thank you guys for reading.
94' An anticlimatic finish to what has been a genuinely thrilling semifinal. Hume tries to make me look like an idiot, as he runs in behind Goian, but he drags his shot well wide! UFF!
92' OOO Belencoso is still hungry for a goal - he harries and hassles Goian into conceding a corner. The corner is whipped in well by JaviLara, but the ref blows for a foul in the box, and Mumbai are out of that particular...uhm... corner
91' FOUR minutes of added time. Kolkata are playing with the swagger of a team who are a goal, and a person, up
89' UFF Goian is such a magnificent defender. He puts his head on the line - literally - to head away a dangerous Hume cross before Belencoso can get his massive foot to it.
88' SUBSTITUTION - Juan Belencoso ON, the brilliant Sameegh Doutie OFF
86' Matias Defederico scampers forward in that unique Argentine style of his. He's pulled down - and the kick is straight to Mallo. Lucian Goian pulls out a stunning tackle to prevent what would have been a deadly Kolkata counter
85' Chhetri is still on the left - he's had a horror game, I must say, but it beggars belief that Chettri is not allowed to play the no. 10 role atleast now. Come on Senor Alexandre!
84' Oh that is some lovely football from Kolkata. The ball is passed around the middle before it's worked out to Prabir Das. The right back chips in a cheeky little ball to Doutie and the South African smacks a vicious ball across the goal. No one there to meet it, though.
83' OH Kolkata try yet another counter, but Ruidas' clever ball to Hume is chested away by that omnipresent obstacle - Lucian Goian. Mumbai waste their possession though. They look a touch deflated.
81' Sereno is the latest to enter the book, but without Forlan to take the freekicks - the delivery is well... rubbish
80' Kolkata make a change too as Postiga is taken off for Javi Lara. The Portuguese doesn't look happy! Maybe that's just because of that disallowed goal.
79' This really is an uphill task for Mumbai. I assume the brief from the manager would be to shut up shop and minimise the damage. Accordingly, Leo Costa is taken off for Fulganco Cardozo
77' Doutie lifts in a nice little ball, but Mumbai clear frantically.. DOUTIE GETS THE BALL BACK, CUTS IN ON HIS RIGHT, FAKES IT, UNLEASHES A SHOT THAT AMRINDER PARRIES INTO THE PATH OF POSTIGA WHO PUTS IT IN THE BACK OF THE NET! THE REF WHISTLES FOR OFFSIDE THOUGH! THAT WAS CLOSE
75' SUBSTITUTION - Didika off, the exciting Ruidas ON. The winger comes on and teases Sehnaj. The full back gets into the book for a fairly ridiculous challenge from Sehnaj. He smacked him in the head with a high boot. OUCH! Yellow for the right back
74' RED CARD FORLAN! THAT WAS... STUPID. No other word for it, the man just kicked out at Jewel Raja for crying out loud. Ref has no choice but to pull out a second yellow and it's Sayonara Diego.
73' Didika tries to break forward, and he does well to beat Sehnaj on the outside. His cross in is nothing to write home about, though. The ball is worked back to Prabir, and the right back who has had an excellent game , swings in a superb cross. It's collected well by Mallo, though
71' That was a major let down. Forlan and Chhetri try to combine, but the Uruguayan's ball in is too high, and Mallo claims comfortably. Forlan then decides to have a pop - and why not - but his powerful shot from the edge of the box flies wide.
70' Didika has been in Sehnaj's pocket all day long. And continues to be, as the temporary right back wins the ball off him with the ease of a grown man playing against kids.
69' For once Sameegh Doutie is handled well by the Mumbai defence. Khongjee and Gerson manage to a win a goal kick off him after pinning him into the corner.
67' Didika tries to Zidane his way into ATK Folklore. You know what the result is - the ball's somewhere on the Hooghly right now. Mumbai come back and try to make something out of it, but Defederico is shepherded out of play and that is a goal kick
65' Prabir tries to live up to Soumalya's words and weave his way into the Kolkata box, but Khongjee is having none of it. Mumbai counter, but a loose Defederico touch allows Jewel to spring into the challenge and win the ball. He launches it forward, and Hume almost hassles Amrinder into smacking it against him.
64' Ah! Poor touch from Gerson concedes a throw for Kolkata - but this being the ISL - Kolkata hands it right back. One for all, and all for one is the motto in this league.
61' This time he elects to cross it, rather than channel his inner 2010 self, but Mallo gathers with zero fuss. Kolkata counter, and Doutie wins a corner. He himself takes it, and it's not very good. SUBSTITUTION - Cafu OFF, Defederico ON
60' Another counter! Borja tries to play in Hume, but the Canadian wolverine is offside this time. Meanwhile in the other half, Mumbai win a freekick in Diego Forlan 2010 wonder goal territory.
59' KOLKATA COUNTER IMMEDIATELY! Hume lays off a superb pickout from Mallo to Doutie. The South AFrican skins Khongjee and finds Hume with a lovely little ball into the box - and he places it INCHES WIDE OF THE POST! OH OH OH HUME!
58' HE ALMOST DOES! The ball pinballs around dangerously, but Leo Costa ends that move by tamely placing it into Mallo's welcoming arms
57' Keegan Perreira has just smacked his BFC Captain in the face. I wouldn't come back to Bengaluru if I were you Keegan! THAT LOOKED PAINFUL! Forlan stands over the freekick in yet another dangerous position. Can he create magaic again?
56' Leo Costa unleashes a heatseeker of a shot from twenty yards out, but it clangs into the advertising hoardings.
55' Dada looks pleased with what he's seeing from his team. Funfact - Ganguly came to prominence in Kolkata after scoring a sumptuous injury time free kick winner for St. Xaviers in a major high school competition. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT MAN CAN'T DO - apart from hook a ball.
53' OH! My partisan colleague Soumalya is going bonkers here as his Bengali Maldini - Prabir Das - pulls off a superb body swerve before putting in a lovely cross onto Hume's shining head. The Canadian's header is wonderful, but Amrinder is upto the challenge and saves it well. The corner from Doutie is brilliant, but yet again Amrinder saves from Hume
51' Hume harries a bit too forcefully for the ref's liking, and it's a foul. OOOOOO FISTICUFFS! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT! Forlan gets into the ref's book after he runs into Sereno. The Uruguayan doesn't like it one bit and politely tells Sereno where he can keep the card on his person. Sigh. No fight, though!
49' OOOO! CHANCE! Forlan broke in behind the ATK defence and he squared it to an onrushing Chhetri. The great man doesn't have enough time to set himself up and his smack goalward arrows in on Row Z
48' Vadocz, Cafu and Forlan try to pass their way through like they are an erastz Barcelona. But they aren't and Sereno shuts the door on them with an unceremonious boot upfield
