Minecraft possesses an in-game rarity system that classifies various blocks and items based on their difficulty to obtain. These items/blocks are ranked in the rarity system by category (common, uncommon, rare, epic) and are assigned a text color accordingly. With this system, players can be informed of which items and blocks they possess.
As of Minecraft Bedrock Preview 1.21.30.21, the rarity system has been reworked by Mojang to better reflect items and blocks that are difficult to obtain in Minecraft. This also applies to epic rarity items/blocks, which have been accordingly reclassified based on the following criteria:
- The chance of finding the item/block in a loot table or mob drop.
- The amount of travel required to obtain the item/block.
- The difficulty of the obstacles that must be overcome to obtain the item/block.
- The possible amount of an item/block that can exist within the game world.
With that in mind, it doesn't hurt to take a look at the items and blocks that are classified as having epic rarity post-Minecraft Bedrock Preview 1.21.30.21.

Elytra
Just about any Minecraft player enjoying Survival Mode knows that it takes a considerable amount of effort to find one pair of Elytra, including gaining access to the End, defeating the Ender Dragon, and pillaging an end ship. Given all that effort, it's no real surprise that Elytra is considered an epic rarity item, even if players have found ways of collecting several pairs in the End.
Throw in the fact that players can only be expected to find so many end cities with connected end ships, and it's understandable for Elytra to remain one of the rarest items in the game.
Dragon Heads
Much like Elytra, finding dragon heads in Minecraft requires gaining access to the End and defeating the Ender Dragon before finding an end city with an attached end ship, which will have a dragon head on its bow. While these blocks are effectively cosmetic and don't serve many purposes beyond that, they're difficult to obtain nonetheless in a Survival Mode run.
Some players may not put much stock in dragon heads given their relative lack of utility compared to other epic rarity blocks and items, but the effort required to obtain them is what places them in this rarity classification.
Dragon Eggs
Dragon eggs are likely classified as epic rarity blocks for a few particular reasons. Not only do they require players to enter the End in Minecraft and defeat the Ender Dragon, but without mods, data packs, add-ons, or other forms of manipulation, players can only obtain one dragon egg in Java Edition and two in Bedrock Edition when the Ender Dragon is beaten a second time in Survival Mode.
Without commands, mods, etc., only two dragon eggs can be obtained in Survival Mode at most, making them a no-brainer when it comes to blocks categorized as having epic rarity.
Silence Armor Trims
Among Minecraft's various armor trim smithing templates introduced in the Trails & Tales update, it takes a particularly determined player to seek out the Silence armor trim, especially more than one. Even though they can be duplicated with diamonds and cobbled deepslate, finding a lone Silence armor trim template is still a task unto itself due to where these templates are found.
Specifically, these trim templates are found in ancient city loot chests, and they only have a 1.2% chance of appearing in these chests. A few poor moves can result in the deadly Warden appearing in the ancient city and causing trouble. Hence, it isn't too surprising to see how these armor trim templates made their way to the epic rarity category.
Heavy Cores
A new addition in Minecraft 1.21, heavy cores are obtained by unlocking ominous vaults within trial chambers. However, these blocks only have a 7.5% chance of being dispensed from ominous vaults. Also, the process of undertaking ominous trials just to get the chance to obtain these blocks is what makes them so rare and valuable in Survival Mode.
While heavy cores don't have many uses in Minecraft, they're a core component of crafting the mace weapon, arguably the strongest melee weapon in the game when used correctly.
Maces
As of Bedrock Preview 1.21.30.21, any item/block crafted by using a rarity-ranked item/block will inherit the highest possible rarity category among its components. Since heavy cores are a mace crafting component and since they have an epic rarity rank, this rarity is conferred onto the mace when it's crafted, even though the breeze rods used to make the mace have a common rarity rank.
Additionally, since the mace does require players to find a heavy core in the first place as well as obtain breeze rods by fighting breeze mobs, there's a fair amount of work and obstacles to overcome to craft even one mace, which certainly contributes to its rarity as well.
