Minecraft Java Edition has loads of mods made by its bustling player base since it is based on the Java coding language. There are all kinds of mods that either increase performance, add new mobs, biomes, items, blocks, and even change some core mechanics. In the content creator space, camera and editing mods like Replay and Flashback are two of the most popular mods.
While one is older and has more versatility, the other one is newer and has a lot more features. If we put it simply, you should prefer using the Flashback mod over the Replay mod. Let's dig deeper into what each mod offers.

Replay mod

Replay is the older mod in this comparison since it was first released in 2014 for the Minecraft 1.7.10 game version. Hence, it is one of the most established camera and editing mods out there.
The mod allows you to record, replay, and share moments from the game. It allows you to create smooth camera movements that are not connected to your character in the game; the camera can fly anywhere, offering some stunning angles.
Once it is installed, the mod has the ability to constantly record your gameplay in the background, which can then be seen by you and edited in any way possible. You can even create paths for the camera and make it automatically move in a specific manner to create shots. You can play around with the speed and camera movement keyframes to create beautiful shots and then render the video to your device.
Since it is an old mod, its biggest strength is that it is compatible with a wide range of game versions, right from 1.7.10 to 1.21 and above. Hence, if you are in an old world, you can still record videos with this mod.
However, the biggest downside of the mod is that it does not have nearly as many features as Flashback.
Flashback mod
As mentioned in the intro, Flashback is a much newer mod since it was released in August 2024. It only supports 1.21 and above game versions, which is a major downside of this mod. If you are on servers or using your favorite mods in an older game version, you might not be able to use the Flashback mod.
Almost every other feature it offers, apart from this, makes it a better mod than Replay. Flashback is a highly customizable and feature-packed mod for creating stunning shots in Minecraft.
Firstly, its entire UI can be moved around, allowing you to set up your very own editing layout that you are comfortable with.
Furthermore, it adds a bunch of in-game feature toggles, like rendering blocks, sky, particles, entities, name tags, players, etc. It even allows players to remove the action bar, boss bar, fog, etc.
You can also override features like the FOV, time of day, camera shake, and camera roll.
In conclusion, this mod not only allows you to record shots that naturally occur in a world, but it also allows you to completely alter certain aspects of the game that are only possible through commands.
