"Now I can't unsee it": Minecraft fan shares a disappointing detail of heart icon leaving community frustrated

Minecraft has been around for over 15 years. With millions of players worldwide playing the game for thousands of hours, one might expect every little detail about it to be known. Yet, now and then, players find something that has never been seen before. This time, a fan discovered something about the health indicator in the game.

Minecraft player and Reddit user Rainbow_Doggo_TNT shared a close-up image of the heart icon that indicates the player’s health. While players know what the heart looks like in the game, what they may not know is what half a heart looks like. As it turns out, a half-heart is asymmetric.

Reacting to this image, another user by the name Venom-Robot said:

"How dare U... Now I can't unsee it."

Rightly so, as it is very difficult to unsee the asymmetry in the way the heart fills. Other Redditors also reacted to this hilarious and mildly infuriating find. u/KyuubiWindscar explained the reason behind this asymmetry. Apparently, the heart icon is actually seven pixels wide, meaning that it cannot be divided equally.

u/Proxy_PlayerHD suggested that the crosshair texture is 16x16 wide however the crosshair itself is just 9x9 wide, meaning that it is always slightly off-center.

Minecraft’s classic blocky appearance comes from tiny pixels that make up the entire texture of the game. The crafting table, trees, the sky, the newly added vault in Minecraft, and all the blocks, every texture in the game is made up of pixels. So it is natural that many of these textures will have an uneven number of pixels. As a result, they cannot be divided equally.

That said, the good news is that no matter how uneven these icons are, since they are so small, they are barely noticeable. Unless players zoom in on them, the half-heart looks symmetrical. One funny thing that can be taken from this is when players fight dangerous mobs like the Breeze in Minecraft, they can at least be happy to know that they have more than half health.
