Knowing your ping is crucial in Throne and Liberty. This MMO has a highly PvP-focused endgame, so bad network stats can turn the tides of small-scale scenarios. It's especially brutal in 3v3 Arenas if you lose due to a subpar network connection rather than any tack or counterplays. Rather than the rhythm-based rotation of Final Fantasy 14, the combat of Throne and Liberty is all about reactive measures and ability-spamming efficiently.
Unfortunately, the game doesn't have any innate way to display your current ping at the time of writing. However, if you're on PC, there's a workaround to let you check your latency (ping) after you connect to a world server.
How to check the ping when playing Throne and Liberty on PC
As mentioned, there's currently no way to check ping while playing Throne and Liberty. Any live network stat display is bafflingly unavailable in this free-to-play game, even though it's pivotal for a live multiplayer environment like this.
Thankfully, Windows users can use the Resource Monitor tool to check their ping at any time. Follow these steps to find out what your ping is:
- Enter the game and connect to a server. Once the session is all loaded up and you can move your character, alt-tab out of the window.
- Open Task Manager.
- Go to the Performance tab and select Open Resource Monitor at the bottom of the window.
- Once Resource Monitor is open, go to the Network tab at the top.
- Tick TL.exe, which is the process for Throne and Liberty.
- You'll see three options in the panel below under the "Latency" column. There will be multiple Latencies, but your ping is usually indicated by the third one.
As it's quite tedious to Alt-Tab out of the game to check your ping continuously. This method is thus only useful if you're unsure which server region you should create your character on.
If you're in the middle of two Throne and Liberty server regions, for example, it can be difficult to intuitively tell which one will net you better ping. Furthermore, some server regions may perform better due to technicalities in your ISP rather than distance from the megaserver.
If you have a second monitor, this can also be a good way to track your ping live. At the moment though, this tool doesn't exist for console users. One can only hope NCSoft adds the option to view network stats in-game in a future update.
