Overview of Quordle Game Modes
Unlike its inspiration Wordle, Quordle’s creators decided to take things one step further and instead of just sticking to the daily puzzle, they added a few extra modes for solvers. The daily mode is what attracts millions of players on a daily basis and it has three modes within that; Daily: Classic, Chill, and Extreme. These modes have varying challenges with the level of the puzzles increasing from Classic to Extreme.
While it may sound scary because of how challenging the game can get, Quordle also has a practice mode that has unlimited play for solvers. It allows every player, newbies and the experienced, to improve their skills, create new strategies, and more, all without affecting their statistics. The game also has a weekly challenge, that is open to players once they’ve solved at least one daily challenge.
Not only that, Quordle also has a Daily Sequence which is similar to the original game with a few changes, the major one mainly being that only one unsolved word is visible. Once players solve that, then they can move on to the next and the next until they finish the puzzle. It does make things slightly more complicated for solvers but it has attracted quite a lot of fans since its release.
How to Switch Between Game Modes in Quordle
Because Quordle’s creators kept things simple with their user interface and since Merriam-Webster has only tweaked the performance here and there, it’s relatively simple to explore the interface. Thus, for those looking to switch between game modes, it becomes that much easier. Here’s how:
Open Quordle on Merriam-Webster’s website.
The game usually opens on the Daily: Classic page and all players have to do is click on the drop-down box next to the words Daily: Classic.
After that all players have to do is pick the mode they want as they all appear in the drop-down list.
However, for those looking to tackle the Weekly Challenge, that’s only available to elite solvers who have managed to solve at least one daily puzzle during the week.
Daily: Classic
The original Quordle mode, Daily: Classic tasks players with solving four five-letter words simultaneously within nine guesses. It’s what made the game a viral sensation and each day a new puzzle is uploaded, similar to Wordle’s daily puzzle albeit with an increased challenge level. The mode provides solvers with color-coded feedback and based on that, players need to make decisions on their next guess.
It's very challenging but engaging at the same and often forces players to think on their feet or create strategies on how to tackle all four grids simultaneously. There are various methods available but in the end, the solver needs to pick the one that most suits them.
Daily: Chill
Unlike the Daily: Classic or Extreme, Quordle’s Daily: Chill is as the title suggests a slower and more relaxing word-game experience for players. While it retains the classic Quordle format, the game usually features less complex words and also offers players 12 guesses instead of 9. The mechanics and gameplay remain the same, as does the color-coded feedback that players get.
It also refreshes with the other daily challenges on a daily basis which makes it perfect for newer players as the challenge it offers is easier than the other modes. However, even then, because of the format and the challenge that Quordle offers players, the Daily: Chill mode still offers a decent challenge.
Daily: Extreme
The most challenging version of Quordle available today, the Daily: Extreme mode retains the classic Quordle format but it cuts down the attempts from 9 to 8. Also, the mode features obscure and uncommon words, making things even tougher. However, the color-coded feedback system remains the same but the added difficulties force players to be even more strategic as compared to the other modes.
Because of that, it makes the Daily: Extreme challenge the biggest test of vocabulary, cognitive skills, and strategic thinking for even the most experienced solvers.
Weekly Challenge
Like most of the other modes, Quordle’s Weekly Challenge maintains the classic Quordle format with only a few tweaks to the mode. The main one is that it is locked until a player completes at least one daily puzzle over the course of the week. However, once unlocked and solved, the puzzle has a weekly reset cycle, with the new puzzle launched every Monday. But players don’t need to start the weekly challenge puzzle the moment it’s released as it’s available throughout the week.
Thus, as a result, for players who can’t solve a daily puzzle till Sunday, the weekly challenge will be available the moment the puzzle is solved and can be tackled after that. It is, however, tougher than the Daily: Classic challenge and does contain tougher words to guess compared to the same. It isn’t as tough as the Daily: Extreme but does offer its own challenge for solvers.
Quordle Sequence
A far more challenging version as compared to the typical puzzle, the Quordle Sequence tasks players with solving four words not simultaneously but in a specific order. Thus, as a result, only one grid is open to players at a time and until they solve that word, they can’t move on to the next one. That does make things tougher especially since each guess applies to each grid as per usual.
However, because of the added difficulty, Quordle’s creators upped the number of guesses from 9 to 10 but even then, that doesn’t remove the added challenge. It does force players to create new strategies as the typical plan that works for the Daily: Classic puzzle, may not be as effective for the Daily Sequence puzzle.

Practice
Arguably the perfect mode for newbies to play, Quordle’s practice mode takes everything that the Daily: Classic offers with the added bonus of being a practice mode. Thus players have the chance not just to improve their solving skills but also to create new strategies to tackle puzzles, experiment with various starting words, and improve their own cognitive skills at their own pace. The mode doesn’t track statistics which means players can make as many mistakes as they keep experimenting and learning.
It’s particularly useful, as mentioned at the start, for newcomers and just as useful for the more experienced Quordle solvers looking to improve and test new methods.
Which Quordle Mode is Best for Improving Your Skills?
For those looking to improve their skills, the obvious answer is Quordle’s practice mode as it offers everything that a regular puzzle does but without the pressure. The mode follows the Daily: Classic format but unlike the daily challenges it offers unlimited opportunities with puzzle after puzzle available for those who are interested. This allows players to not just improve their skills but also create new plans to tackle the daily puzzles, experiment with various new methods, and more.
It makes it the perfect tool for newcomers to build confidence before they tackle the daily puzzles but for those looking for a proper challenge, the Daily: Extreme is the way to go. Arguably the hardest mode to solve, the mode follows the classic Quordle format but cuts down the number of guesses to 8 to find obscure and uncommon words, which only increases the challenge. This forces players to be more careful with their guesses and it also automatically improves their vocabulary.
