James Dennis Alan Hamlin is an American professional stock car racing driver and team owner who competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, driving the No. 11 Toyota Camry XSE for Joe Gibbs Racing. He also co-owns 23XI Racing with Michael Jordan. Hamlin began racing go-karts in 1988, at age seven. By 1997, aged 15, he won the WKA Manufacturers Cup. From racing mini stocks to the grand stock division and Late Model Stock Cars in 2000, Hamlin debuted in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2005 at the Banquet 400, Kansas. He has the most wins in the Cup Series without a championship amounting to 54 wins, 349 top-10 finishes, and 42 pole positions. He won his first Daytona 500 in 2016 for Joe Gibbs Racing and the Daytona 500 in 2020. Hamlin participated in his first-ever race in the Xfinity Series in 2004 BI-LO, Darlington, and has 18 wins, 101 top-10 finishes, and 21 poles so far. Hamlin started his 2024 season with a win at the 2024 Busch Light Clash at The Coliseum, Los Angeles. Hamlin also competed in five NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races for EJP Racing and finished 10th in his NASCAR debut at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
In September 2020, NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and Hamlin announced that they would manage to field a single-car team named 23XI Racing, for the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season, with Bubba Wallace driving the No. 23. On October 4, 2021, Wallace became the first black driver to win a Cup Series since Wendell Scott in 1963. Hamlin’s team then expanded to a two-car operation for the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season. The new addition was a No. 45 car driven by 2004 Cup Series Champion Kurt Busch. Later on, Busch retired from full-time racing in 2023, making Tyler Reddick join Hamlin’s team in 2024.
