Los Angeles Dodgers Rivalries
The biggest rivals that the Los Angeles Dodgers have are the San Francisco Giants. The rivalry started in the 19th century. It started because both teams belonged to New York. The Giants were situated in the Polo Grounds in Manhattan, and the Dodgers were situated in Brooklyn. It was in 1957 that the Dodgers' owner, Walter O'Malley, decided to move the team to Los Angeles. However, O’Malley decided to invite the owner of the Giants, Horace Stoneham, to L.A as well. The rivalry was famous enough for O’Malley to justify such a decision. Now both teams reside in California. The teams have met for a total number of 2,607 times, with the Giants winning 1296 games.
The Dodgers also had a rivalry with the New York Yankees for a similar reason of being based in New York. The rivalry is also called the Subway Series. The teams have met a total of 96 times, with the Yankees claiming 50 victories.
Other rivalries of the team include teams such as the Los Angeles Angels, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, St. Louis Cardinals, and Houston Astros. The rivalry with the Angels is because they are both based in L.A. The rivalry is also called the freeway series. It is an interleague rivalry.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have a divisional rivalry with the San Diego Padres. The teams have met for a total of 976 times, with the Dodgers winning 539 games. The team's rivalry with the Arizona Diamondbacks is divisional. The teams have met for a total of 484 times, with the Dodgers winning 276 games out of those games.
