The New York Mets selected Kelenic in the first round of the 2018 MLB draft, and later that year, the Seattle Mariners acquired him. He made his Major League debut with the Mariners in 2021,


One of the best prospects of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft, Kelenic was selected by the New York Mets (sixth overall) in the draft, and he received $4.5 million as signing bonus. Following his signing, Kelenic was sent to the Gulf Coast League Rookies, then in July, he was promoted to the Rookie League Kingsport Mets of the Rookie-level Appalachian League. He slashed .286/.371/.468 with six home runs, 42 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases in 56 games between the two organizations.


Kelenic was promoted to the major leagues and added to the 40-man roster on May 13, 2021, marking his first major league experience. That day, he debuted against the Cleveland Indians as the starting left fielder, going hitless in four at-bats. On May 14, the next day, Kelenic scored his first run in Major League Baseball with a two-run home drive in the bottom of the third inning that traveled an estimated 403 feet.

Jarred Kelenic’s Early Life

Jarred Kelenic went to Waukesha West High School. He was awarded MVP of the U18 USA Baseball team that took home the gold medal in the Pan American Games in 2016. He committed to play baseball at the University of Louisville during his collegiate career. Kelenic participated in the Marlins Park High School Home Run Derby in July 2017. He also participated in the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game later that month.


In 2017, he competed for Team USA once more and took home the gold medal for the second time. This success led to Kelenic being considered as a top prospect before the 2018 Major League Baseball draft. He was picked by the New York Mets and made his professional debut with the Rookie League Gulf Coast League Mets. Kelenic was traded later that year to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz and $20 million. He began his season with the West Virginia Power of the Single-A South Atlantic League. In May of that year, he was promoted to the Modesto Nuts of the High-A California League. Kelenic was promoted to the Double-A Texas League's Arkansas Travellers in August 2019. Between the three clubs, he slashed over 117 games, 23 home runs, 68 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases in 291/.364/.540. After the season, he was chosen to play for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League.


Due to the COVID-19 pandemic-related cancellation of the minor league season in 2020, Kelenic did not play in any minor league games and instead spent the summer in Seattle's training camp. Prospect analysts gave Kelenic high marks throughout his minor league career; in 2020, MLB.com and Baseball America ranked him as the eleventh-best prospect in baseball, and in 2021, they ranked him fourth.
