Before Joel could kill Sam, Burrell took the gun from him and shot his own brother, saving Ellie from getting bitten.
The shock of shooting his own younger brother to death, was a huge blow for Henry mentally and without thinking much the character brought the gun towards his head. Despite Joel’s pleas to put the gun down, Burrell shot himself in the head, killing him instantly. Joel and Ellie buried Henry and Sam side by side outside the motel that morning.
