5 WWE Superstars Who Shine on the Mic

John Cena has gotten plenty of practice with the microphone.

Vince McMahon certainly knows how to handle a microphone. As important as physical prowess is to a professional wrestling career, perhaps no factor is as key to getting over with the fans as microphone skills. Wrestlers that can work the mic can overcome other shortcomings, while those that struggle with promos are limited regardless of other talents. This list will focus on wrestlers, so guys like Paul Heyman aren't up for debate. That said, here's five guys who can mix itup with their words as well as their actions

#5 John Cena

John Cena has gotten plenty of practice with the microphone.

Some fans might argue that Cena’s microphone act is as stale and predictable as his ring work, but that line of thinking is a bit biased. The fact remains that Cena can handle the mic as smoothly as anyone on the roster and manages to come up with humorous barbs despite his seemingly permanent face status.

Very few, if any, other faces on the WWE payroll can handle the job that Cena often does, speaking out for the WWE Universe and “good guys” a whole, which also explains why his promos come off as hokey or cheesy.

#4 Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens’ persona is magnified by his promos.

To be a truly effective wrestling heel, a superstar has to embrace the role on the microphone. Kevin Owens has proven in his short time on the WWE’s main roster that he is capable of doing that.

In addition to insulting and showing very little interest in the happiness of the crowd, Owens finds creative ways to demean his opponent. During his recent feud with Ryback, he even brought down a popular motivational book that “The Big Guy” had pointed out as an inspiration, just so he could make fun of the book and its readers, specifically Ryback.

#3 Dean Ambrose

Dean Ambrose employs his own style when he gets the mic in his hand.

Dean Ambrose is known as “The Lunatic Fringe,” and he plays on this in his promos. The character is known to be willing to fight anyone, anytime, under any circumstances, and Ambrose embraces that role.

What’s great about Ambrose is that his gimmick works regardless of what he’s involved in. He was phenomenal in more serious feuds with Bray Wyatt and Seth Rollins or during his Shield Days, but he was also integral to a more comic storyline as various superstars snuck away with the Intercontinental title leading up to Wrestlemania 31.

#2 New Day

New Day’s antics have helped them carve a place for themselves in the WWE.

When the New Day began working as heels, their true abilities as a stable became apparent, particularly on the microphone. From singing songs accompanied by a trombone to typical heel tactics like insulting the town they’re working in, Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E find a way to entertain the fans.

The intricacies of their act aren’t always obvious, either. With Woods sporting a hairdo inspired by the movie “Hook,” Big E actually quoted from the movie during his interaction with the Dudley Boyz. That’s commitment to the craft.

#1 Bray Wyatt

Bray Wyatt’s haunting promos have garnered plenty of attention.

Bray Wyatt’s presence on this list can be justified with one statement. He carried a feud with WWE legend The Undertaker into Wrestlemania 31 with very little help from his opponent, and Taker really never even appeared leading up to the match. The entire match was built largely on promos by “The Eater of Worlds.”

Beyond that, Wyatt brings a darker edge to the WWE that others really don’t provide, and he’s also less reliant on scripted cliches while seemingly operating out of his own unique lexicon. Perhaps the most fun is figuring out who he’s talking about when he picks a new target for his rants.
