You don’t need me to tell you that WWE is a pretty intense sport. Even though the franchise runs on a script, you need a body as hard as nails in order to provide extreme entertainment without coming out of it as a wreck. However, one thing that even the toughest body cannot withstand is true human emotion, and believe it or not there have been quite a few times when even the most battle-hardened wrestlers have shed a tear or two, not due to knocks suffered in the rings but because their heartstrings were tugged at. With that in mind, let’s take a look at 6 instances where WWE superstars cried:

#6 Roddy Piper's Tribute

Undoubtedly one of the most popular and beloved wrestlers of all time, Roddy Piper’s recent passing was a massive shock to fans worldwide. And WWE’s recent brilliant tribute to Hot Rod, from his early days with WWF, when he was at the peak of his popularity, to his later appearances, really brought back great memories. The ten-bell toll in his honour was also a lovely touch.

For many fans, Hot Rod excelled at bringing the entertainment factor to wrestling with his brilliant Scottish gimmick, amplified by his iconic entrance theme, so much so that his popularity even rivalled that of his arch-rival Hulk Hogan. The tribute for the late Hall of Famer really moved the entire roster of wrestlers as well as Vince McMahon, who had a very noticeable lump in his throat.

Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerro had been extremely close pals. Both of them started out as unknowns in Japan before becoming WWEs top stars a couple of years later. The years of friendship were on full display during the Wrestlemania event back in 2004. Benoit just won the world title after submitting Tripe H and was congratulated on his accomplishment by none other than Guerrero who defended his title against Kurt Angle earlier that day.

Tears flowed as the two friends celebrated their remarkable victories to applause from the delighted crowd.

Edge, in his extremely moving speech, spoke about his close friends, his heartbreaking injury history and finally his decision to call it a day. That was really the end of a WWE Hall of fame career

If you’re one of WWE’s most iconic stars and you’re about to retire then you can expect your send off to be emotional. Ric Flair, one of WWE’s shining lights, was finally calling it a day and the send-off he got was nothing short of brilliant. From his wonderful speech where he spoke about his journey as a wrestler to the moment The Undertaker went up to the ring and gave him a hug, emotions ran high every single minute.

Nobody thought the great Ric Flair could shed a tear, but when he did it was really with good reason.

The year was 2005. One of WWE’s most loved stars, Eddie Guerro, had been taken away from the world too soon. The brilliant Latino wrestler had an impact on so many of the lives of his peers and fans, and it all showed during his superb tribute.

Clips were shown of the wrestler’s magical moments in the ring as well as home videos of his childhood along with photos with his family. At the end of the tribute, there wasn’t a single dry eye in the stadium. Typically macho stars such as John Cena and Big Show as well as Eddie’s close friend Chris Benoit were seen openly weeping during this touching event.

#1 Post 9/11 SmackDown Airing

Besides David Letterman, WWE was one of the first entertainment programs to air after the devastating September 11 attacks. The atmosphere at the Smackdown event, which aired just three days after the attacks, was thick with emotion. Lilian Garcia’s brilliant rendition of the national anthem had nearly everyone moved to tears including some of WWE’s top stars.

This remarkable show of emotion and unison, especially during the “and our flag was still there” verse showed the world that the terrorists had failed in their mission. They had come with the aim of breaking America’s spirit, but instead managed to make the citizens of the country even stronger. This has to be up there with WWE’s most touching moments, for sure.
