5 Most Underrated matches in Hell In A Cell history

Cena vs Orton in 2014Hell In A Cell is one of the most destructive structures in the world of wrestling. We have witnessed legendary matches like Mankind Vs The Undertaker at King of The Ring 1998 which showcased why it’s so dangerous to be anywhere around a cell.We have classics like the Bad Blood match between HBK and Taker where kane debuted and recently Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins tried to reignite the flame that once surrounded the matches that took place inside a cage.In the PG Era, WWE created an entire PPV revolving around this structure which weren’t as bloody as its predecessors, but were still good enough and were overlooked in the larger scheme of things. Here are the 5 Most Underrated matches in Hell In A Cell history.

#5 Randy Orton Vs John Cena 2014

It’s really easy to overlook this match by hardcore fans at least for the very strong reason that this feud is oft-repeated and much hyped. Two of the most protected performers in the business just don’t have enough chemistry between them or rather they just never clicked with the right storyline.

Before the match began, one camera person took a shot of a fan sign that read “Enjoy Cena Vs Orton #121”. That was hilarious for the precise reason that WWE seems to be accepting what many fans were thinking or for the fact that maybe it was a mistake and that camera person was going to get fired.

Anyway, the interesting possibility was an Orton Vs Lesnar match which did not, of course, happen. But these two gave one of the best matches in their very forgettable, long- drawn rivalry. That wasn’t expected, but that remains a fact.

#4 Randy Orton Vs Daniel Bryan 2013

This was a match where you’d expect the possibility that despite the phenomenal performance Daniel Bryan is accustomed to putting out, he’ll be the one taking the loss to the heel champion Randy Orton.

In retrospect, this seems right because Bryan’s victory, given his hard work and the determination to prove all his detractors wrong, should have come at a much grander stage. Bryan lost at Hell in a Cell, but this was one of the many things that worked in his favor when he finally won at Wrestlemania.

Also, his once upon a time role model, Shawn Michaels, turned heel on him to make for a noteworthy swerve.

#3 The Undertaker Vs CM Punk 2009

This match is often marred by the fact that it was for a championship and opened the PPV. Punk’s momentum was halted after Undertaker won and the bout was a short affair compared to a usual HIAC match, which adds to the reasons for it being underwhelming.

But the fact of the matter is that despite all of that, Taker and Punk put on quite a fight and it was actually pretty darn good for the amount of time it aired. Taker, being the veteran when it comes to the brutal structure, won. As was obvious.

But it still remains one of the better HIAC matches in the PG Era.

#2 DX vs Legacy 2009

It didn’t need to have dragged along but for whatever it was, it was good. Also, when Shawn Michaels is in a match, the quality automatically becomes better.

Plus he had an HIAC veteran like Triple H by his side. They were facing new competition in the young team of The Legacy which had Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase Jr. While the likes of HBK and HHH were veterans, Dibiase Jr, and Rhodes were the sons of veterans and felt entitled to fight at the spot they were fighting and they did dominate the match only to be overpowered by the gunslingers who still owned the place.

#1 Randy Orton vs Mark Henry

Apart from Triple H and The Undertaker, Randy Orton should hold the distinction of being a Hell in a Cell veteran.

He’s had unspectacular matches, but mostly he’s always delivered in one of the toughest structures to grace the WWE. And there is nothing more satisfying to see one of the company’s premier stars get dominated and defeated by a tough, long time loyalist like Mark Henry.

Mark Henry was having some of his best career moments in 2011 and it seemed like all of those years of hard work was finally paying off. The once upon a time ‘Legend Killer’ was inducted into the Hall of Pain inside the steel structure of pain.
