WWE Superstars who had their Farewell Match in WrestleMania

As an old quote says, all good things must come to an end, and same applies to every immortal that set his foot into the squared circle to embrace the cheers from the fans. A majority of the superstars hangs up their kayfabe character without much of hype while others give a farewell match which would be a big draw for the promotion they are in. Having a farewell match is a great thing to start with but something which is more legendary than that is having that farewell match on the grand stage of them all: WrestleMania. Not many names had the luxury of doing the same but there were some rare breeds that were fortunate enough to see out their career with a big WrestleMania moment. So here is a look at those big names who took the final bow at the legendary pay-per-view.

#5 Edge

Edge is one of those superstars who had to bow down to the clutches of injury at an early age itself. Before his career was cut short, Edge had his last match came at WrestleMania XXVII against Alberto Del Rio in which Edge successfully defended his World Heavyweight championship.

The fans weren’t aware that they were witnessing Edge get into the ring for the last time as they were not informed. Edge later came to Raw an announced that he had to retire from in ring action due to the neck problems which even had risks of ending his life.

Edge never wrestled a match after that but one thing that the company would now regret is about not informing that fans that it was his last match.

If they had did that, Edge would’ve had a great send off at WrestleMania rather than a smaller ovation on Raw,

#4 Andre the Giant

Arguably the biggest WrestleMania moment of Andre the Giant came against Hulk Hogan in WrestleMania III but many are still unaware of the fact that he had his last match in WrestleMania.

It came in WrestleMania VI where Andre was teamed up with Haku against the Demoliton for the WWF tag team championship.

Unfortunately the match ended with a loss for Andre’s team and he wasn’t even tagged into the match because of medical reasons. Post-match, he turned against his partner Haku which was a face turn actually which paved him the way to remain in the company as a face manager.

Such a great career coming to an abrupt end wasn’t something that the fans wanted to see, however Andre is someone who was an integral part in building up WrestleMania as a big event and he deserves every bit to be in this list.

#3 Stone Cold Steve Austin

Another superstar who had his career cut short with injury, Austin went out with a bang by headlining WrestleMania in his last match.

Austin was suffering from neck problems like edge ever since Owen Hart messed up a pile driver in SummerSlam of 1997 but he went on to wrestle for a long time despite that and finally hanged his boots in WrestleMania XIX.

His opponent in the last match was none other than The Rock, who Austin faced twice in WrestleMania before the farewell match. Though he won those two, Austin went out on a losing note and gave Rock a much needed push.

He then hung around WWE as the co- general manager of Raw for some time and had many appearances every now and then as special guest referee. Despite retiring so early, he still remains one of the biggest fan favorites in the business who could give the light of Daniel Bryan and John Cena a run for thier money.

#2 Ric Flair

The WWE Universe was at its emotional epitome when Ric Flair’s WWE in ring career ended in WrestleMania XXIV at the hands of Shawn Michaels.

Flair was given an ultimatum by Vince McMahon some months before WrestleMania that the next time he lost a match, he had to retire. Flair managed to hang on to his job till WrestleMania where he chose Shawn Michaels as his next opponents.

The two went on to put a great memorable match for the fans which ended with Shawn Michaels saying I’am sorry I love you before hitting the sweet chin music and getting the win. It marked the end of an illustrious career which filled the voids of professional wrestling.

Following night, the whole locker room paid tribute to the Nature boy who walked out of WWE with his head raised high. However, he later went on to wrestle in TNA and Japan but the WrestleMania show down against Shawn Michaels still remains as his last match in WWE.

#1 Shawn Michaels

When taking the list of top performers in WrestleMania, Shawn Michaels is a superstar who would be at the top of the mountain no matter what.

His last match came against a fitting opponent in the form of Undertaker in WrestleMania XXVI and was a rematch to their five star match on the preceding WrestleMania. To get Taker into the match, Michaels kept his career on the line and made the famous “Streak vs. Career stipulation which immediately drew huge attention.

Though the match wasn’t as great as their previous encounter, Michaels and Taker gave a memorable match which was etched into WrestleMania history.

Michaels gave some extraordinary matches in the grand stage against Stone Cold, Bret Hart, Kevin Nash and many more and closing out a legendary career with a match against Undertaker was something he clearly deserved.

Most of the fans still hope to see him back in the ring as everyone believes that the Mr. WrestleMania has one more match in his pocket to give the fans.
