The Seattle Mariners are one of the teams in Major League Baseball (MLB). This team is known for competing in the West Division of the American League (AL).

The Seattle Mariners were formed as a team in 1977. Since then, the team has competed in the MLB games and have won three West Division titles till now. However, this team is yet to win any World Series Championships or AL pennants in their career. This hasn't prevented the team from losing popularity among the fans. The team has a dedicated fan base that it caters to.

In the present times, The Seattle Mariners have added some hungry and talented names to their roster to improve and make the team better. Their entire focus is now on winning their first World Series Championships in the MLB for themselves and their fans.

Seattle Mariners History

The team Seattle Mariners was created after the proceedings of a legal case was over. The original baseball team from Seattle relocated to Milwaukee and became the Milwaukee Brewers. For this, the commissioner of baseball of the city of Seattle, King County and Washington state sued the American League. The American League (AL) of the MLB provided an opportunity to create an expansion team for their city in 1976. Consequently, the Seattle Mariners was formed in 1977 and began to play in the MLB.

Despite having some well known and talented players on the roster, the Seattle Mariners faced difficulties in competing against the other teams in their initial years. With the arrival of Ken Griffey Jr. on the team, fortunes began to change for the team as both father-son duo improved the batting portion of the team to a great extent. During the 1990s, the team began to show an improvement in their performance which started with the arrival of manager Lou Piniella on the team. The team also went on to win its first AL West Division title in 1995.

Unfortunately after this, the team again declined in their performance and continued to do so until 1999. In 2000, they gained a Wild Card berth for themselves for the first time. Although the team lost Alex Rodriguez during this time, they gained players like Ichiro Suzuki and Bret Boone. Resultantly, the team had one of the best seasons in 2001 with a record of 116-46. The team continued its good performance until the 2003 season. From the 2004 to 2006 seasons, the team took time to rebuild and improve themselves again.

In the 2007 season, the Seattle Mariners performed fairly well under the expert craftsmanship of players like Ichiro Suzuki and Adam Jones. Unfortunately, they had a disastrous season in 2008 with a record of 61-101. The Seattle Mariners had a good season in 2014 with many of its players getting critically acclaimed for their performances on the field. They continued adding new and talented pitchers to their roster for a hope to appear in the playoffs. Unfortunately, losing games and player trades put a halt to that for the team.

In recent times, especially 2022, the team had one of their best performances in the season. They performed admirably against opponents like the Toronto Blue Jays and the Houston Astros even though they could not make it to the playoffs.

Seattle Mariners Owner

The Seattle Mariners are owned by John Stanton, a businessman from America. He became the CEO of the Seattle Mariners team in 2016.

John Stanton is the owner and is responsible for the day to day operations regarding the team. However, he has received constant criticism, accusations and blame from the fans for not living up to his role as the owner of the team. He has been blamed for not investing money into making the team better, not promoting the minor league affiliations of the team and their stadiums and not even signing better talents on the team. The fans have even gone as far as to call him a fraud.

Besides owning the Seattle Mariners, John Stanton founded Western Wireless Corporation. He was the Chairman and CEO of VoiceStream Wireless and was also previously a chairman for the CTIA.

In his personal life, he lives in Bellevue, Washington, United States with his wife Theresa Gillespie and their two children, both sons.
