Eventually, the team moved to Maryland and renamed itself as the Baltimore Orioles. This team is notable for winning three World Series Championships in the MLB till now. Furthermore, they have won pennants and titles in the American League (AL) several times throughout their playing journey. The team got its name from the Baltimore Oriole which is officially the state bird of Maryland, United States.

In the present times, the Baltimore Orioles has become one of the best teams in the MLB.

Baltimore Orioles History

The Baltimore Orioles team began its journey in 1954 after completing its two previous iterations as the original Milwaukee Brewers and then the St. Louis Browns. The team spent its initial years rebuilding and improving so they can have a good team. This led to the team having some of the best seasons from 1966 to 1983. During this time, they became World Series Champions three times, won AL pennants and even East division titles. Unfortunately after 1983, the performance of the team declined.

The team moved to a new stadium in 1992. They also hosted the All-Star game of 1993. Additionally, the team continued its better performance and finally was able to enter into the playoffs again in the 1996 and the 1997 seasons. After that however, the team had some of the worst performances till 2006.

In 2007, The team once again turned to improving and rebuilding themselves. This led to the hiring of several talented youngsters including the hiring of Buck Showalter in 2010. Under his guidance, the Baltimore Orioles returned to form and had a brilliant performance during the 2012 season to 2016 season. During the 2014 season, they also became the AL East Division Champions. Unfortunately, after this, Buck Showalter could not prevent the decline in the performance of the team. They had one of the worst seasons in MLB in 2018. Resultantly, Buck Showalter was not given another contract after the end of the season.

In the 2019 season, the team traded away many of their fan favorite players as part of rebuilding the team again. In the present day, the team is having one of the best seasons in 2023. They have managed to climb up to the top of the AL East Division by beating its rivals.

Baltimore Orioles Owner

The Baltimore Orioles are owned by Peter George Angelos. He is a trial lawyer and baseball owner from America. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, United States on July 4, 1929, he along with a group of investors purchased the Baltimore Orioles team in 1993. Eventually, he became the owner of the team. Despite having a good work ethnic and dedication towards the team, he was still criticized for the performance of the team.

As Peter Angelos began to grow older, he relinquished the control of the team to his sons John. P. Angelos and Louis Angelos. He remained the owner of the team while his sons managed the day to day operations of the team. John.P. Angelos stated in 2019 neither his father Peter Angelos nor him have any intention to sell the team and move it away from Baltimore, Maryland, United States.

Apart from being the owner of a MLB team, Peter Angelos is also the owner of the Ross Valley Farm in Baltimore where he breeds and races thoroughbred horses. Furthermore, he has also participated in politics as a Democrat.

Baltimore Orioles Rivalries

The major rivals for the Baltimore Orioles are the Washington Nationals. Their rivalry is called the Beltway series. This name is taken from the fact that the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) and the Capital Beltway (I-495) connect the cities of Baltimore and Washington D.C.

Both these teams have intense rivalry with each other. Even the fans of both the teams and cities have expressed enmity towards the other. This rivalry has also been termed as “The Battle of the Beltways.” Despite this, some critics think that no such rivalry exists between the teams.
