Rafael Nadal has announced that he will be representing Team Europe at Roger Federer’s brainchild event, the Laver Cup, during the 2024 Berlin edition.

The event, scheduled from September 20-22 at the Uber Arena, will also see the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev take the stage for Europe. Meanwhile, USA’s Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul, and Australia’s Alex de Minaur will lead the line-up for Team World.

The 2024 edition will mark Nadal’s fourth appearance – he previously featured in the inaugural edition in 2017, and returned in 2019 and 2022.

The highly significant 2022 event saw the Spaniard partner his arch-rival Roger Federer in doubles against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock, in what was the Swiss legend’s swansong. The match was followed by an emotional farewell ceremony, which was also attended by Federer’s family.

It is safe to say there wasn’t a dry eye in the stadium as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer broke down in tears and held each other, realizing the end of an era.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner revisited the special day while announcing his return in Berlin.

"I am very happy to be playing Laver Cup in Berlin for Team Europe. I have some really special memories from my Laver Cup experiences, including all the emotions from London two years ago playing alongside Roger for the last time," he said, as per the tournament's official website.

In 2023, Rafael Nadal hinted that "his intention was for 2024 to be the final year of his career." He added that he wished to compete at the tournaments that were significant to him. In tune with that, the former World No. 1 said that he was hoping to make the most of his appearance at the Laver Cup.

"At this stage in my career I really want to go out there and make the most of every opportunity I am given. Teaming up is always an incredible experience and I have always enjoyed it, the competition is different and exciting," he said.

While Team Europe won the first four editions of the Laver Cup, Team World came out on top in 2022 and 2023. Speaking about bringing back the glory to Europe, the Spaniard said:

"I’m looking forward to going to Berlin and helping Team Europe win back the Laver Cup."

Rafael Nadal is playing a limited schedule this season in light of injury struggles. After competing at the 2024 Brisbane International in January, the Spaniard returned to action at last week's Barcelona Open, where he suffered a second-round defeat to Alex de Minaur. He will next be in action at the Madrid Open (April 24- May 5).
