Alexander Zverev mentioned Jannik Sinner while joking in his 2024 Italian Open winning speech after getting the better of Nicolas Jarry in the final. Fans were not too pleased with the German's joke.

Zverev defeated Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in the semifinal and during his post-match press conference hoped to be Sinner for the Italian fans at the Foro Italico and wished for their support. The fans in the stadium have cheered for the German in the absence of the World No. 2 Italian.

In the final in Rome, Zverev displayed a service masterclass to deny Jarry his first-ever Masters 1000 title and beat him 6-4, 7-5. In the process, the German earned his sixth Masters 1000 title.

During his winning speech at center court, Zverev joked:

"Buongiorno everyone, my name is Jannik [Sinner]."

The fans present in the stadium enjoyed the joke but several fans took to X to express their displeasure.

One fan wrote, "ZVEREV always tries hard to look funny but he's not. He should stop with these cringe jokes."
"Keep his name out of your disgusting mouth," wrote another fan.
A third fan wrote, "You will never be Jannik Sinner, BOZO!"
"Hes trying so hard to be funny," wrote a fourth fan.
"Keep his name out of ur mouth freak," wrote yet another.

Several fans also mentioned Zverev's domestic abuse case and asked him not to relate himself to the Italian.

"Switching identities to try and avoid the domestic abuse case he is about to lose," wrote one fan.
"Jannik respects women hope it helps!" wrote another.

A 20-year-old Alexander Zverev won the Italian Open in 2017. He reached the final again in 2018 but lost to Rafael Nadal. In 2022, he finished runner-up at the Madrid Open before suffering a freak injury at the French Open that year. Since that injury, the Italian Open 2024 is his first Masters 1000 title.

"Obviously winning my first ever [Masters] here in Rome and winning my first after my injury also in Rome, so Rome is a very special place for me," Zverev said during his post-match interview.
"It is a very, very special week," he added.

The German will celebrate his victory in Italy but soon move his focus to the French Open as the main draw in Paris begins on Sunday, May 26.
