Running jokes are hardly the most important thing in pro wrestling, but they always serve as a welcome break from the action. Humor also has a way of contributing to some of the most memorable moments in WWE history, which only speaks to its inherent power.

Interestingly enough, not only has WWE done a fantastic job of inserting humor into weekly programming, but the comedic quality seems to keep improving every week. WWE's humor is also finally centering on more mature content, which is a welcome break from the traditional PG format.

What are some of the best running jokes in WWE right now? While comedy is a subjective art form, especially when you take into consideration the broad age range of the company's audience, here are what we believe to be the very best. As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments below and let us know if there are any we may have missed.

#5 Elias keeps getting interrupted

Isn't it funny watching Elias get interrupted all the time?
Isn't it funny watching Elias get interrupted all the time?

There's nothing better than watching some pompous jerk trash talk the crowd for several minutes, rave about how great of a musician he is, and then get interrupted by another WWE Superstar. The shocked facial expressions that Elias makes every time he gets interrupted make everything worthwhile.

If nothing else, it's a fun break from the regular action inside the ring that can be used as a setup for a match. It also allows whoever interrupts Elias to instantly get the crowd behind them. Suddenly, this goes from being a running gag ,to a tool used to help establish new Superstars.

Elias might not be the best Superstar on the WWE roster, and he might not have the greatest voice, but his cocky attitude and angry reaction to being interrupted will live on in the history books forever. It's just that funny to watch.

#4 Who is Maria Kanellis's "baby daddy"?

Who is the father of Maria Kanellis's unborn baby?
Who is the father of Maria Kanellis's unborn baby?

Who is the father of Maria Kanellis' unborn child? That is the question that the WWE Universe has been tempted with on and off for weeks now, and it's really starting to get intense. It's also some of the best mature programming the company has pulled off in years and is legitimately fun to watch.

From Angelo Dawkins playing coy during one of his backstage promos, to Ricochet being named as the baby daddy at one point, WWE is having a lot of fun adding to the speculation. Furthermore, fans are invested and having fun with it, which should be a sign for the company to do more.

In the end, these segments have delivered some of the best one-liners that the company has had in a long time. It's also a callback to some of their more Attitude Era style content and a welcome break from the lull of a regular show.

Either way, this running joke moves away from formulaic programming and is proof positive that creative can come up with great b roll content when they want to.

#3 Rambling rabbits warnings

Why does Rambling Rabbit keep asking for help?
Why does Rambling Rabbit keep asking for help?

Imagine this scenario. One minute you are watching what you believe to be a family friendly kids show with an off-putting host named Bray Wyatt, and the next minute a rabbit puppet is breaking the fourth wall and begging for your help. He never gets a chance to tell you what he needs help with and somehow unexpectedly dies for no apparent reason.

While some might believe what was described above is a fever dream, it is a reoccurring trope in Bray Wyatt's Firefly Funhouse. This has been bizarrely funny to watch for some reason. Furthermore, between his wall-breaking help signs, to him repeatedly trying to expose the inner workings of The Fiend, it's all been getting very interesting.

Beyond just being ultra creepy to watch play out, especially with the terror in plain sight aesthetic WWE is apparently going for, it's hilarious to watch the little guy get thwarted time and time again. It's reminiscent of South Park, where Kenny is repeatedly killed, only to find his demise shrugged off at every instance.

Maybe that's a little too dark for some and won't resonate well, but for those that can see past the exterior of The FireFly Funhouse and laugh at its insanity, it's ridiculously fun to watch.

#3 Emasculating Mike Kannelis

Will things ever get better for Mike Kannellis?
Will things ever get better for Mike Kannellis?

Another fun part of the ongoing Maria Kannelis baby daddy saga is the fact that Mike Kanellis keeps getting emasculated by everyone on the entire roster. While the joke started off subtle enough with Maria telling Mike to get on his back and let her pin him for The 24/7 Title, it has gone into full-blown questioning his manhood on a weekly basis.

From being told that he isn't the father of his wife's unborn child, to getting beat up by everyone on the roster every time he tries to establish some bit of dominance, he always ends up shamed. Kanellis then proceeds to get ripped to shreds by his wife on the microphone before she inevitably walks away in disgust.

If nothing else, it's an interesting sideshow to help fill up time in between matches and is responsible for some of the company's best comedic moments. This is something WWE created organically and is a way to build up a story week by week.

For as much flack as the writing staff has endured in the past over their comedy, this is truly what they are capable of and remains a promising sign for the future.

#1 Chad Gable short jokes

Why does Chad Gable keep coming up short?
Why does Chad Gable keep coming up short?

As annoying as the Chad Gable short jokes can be, they are also some of the best one-liners in WWE right now and actually do serve a purpose. Some will scream that it's not funny or that WWE is scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one, but it is a brilliant way for Superstars to gain heel heat.

To some, it might look like the company is trying to bury Gable, especially with how gruesome some of the short jokes have been lately, but it does a lot to help get fans behind this new underdog. It also contributes to the storytelling element of Gable's character and will make his eventual breakthrough all the more satisfying.

For example, let's assume for a moment that this feud between he and Baron Corbin keeps going strong. Not only would all of King Corbin's cruel short jokes eventually come back to bite him, but it would also create a feeling of justice for the WWE Universe. That's must-see television at its finest and gives fans someone to identify with, thus creating the next big thing.

Keep in mind that this all depends on whether WWE continues to go down this road, but with rumors of Vince McMahon wanting to push Gable as a babyface, it looks like these jokes are a way of getting to that goal.
