5 most shocking things that have happened at WWE Battleground

One of the more infamous returns

It’s almost time for WWE Battleground taking place this Sunday the 24th of July. Many fans are quite excited for this year’s instalment with exciting matches such as the 6-man tag match between the Club, Enzo and Cass and Cena. Not only do we get that but also get the match everybody has been looking for years - the Shield triple threat.

Not only is it the great matches that attract us to PPV but it’s the great moments that shock us and give us a reason to remember a PPV. Here we take a look at 5 shocking moments from Battleground PPVs of old.

#5 Cesaro takes The Great Khali for a spin (2013)

The king of swing

Antonio Cesaro achieved an astounding feat of greatness at Battleground 2013, taking The Punjabi Playboy for a wild ride on the Cesaro Swing. When Khali finally saw in-ring action, his monstrous chops were only a minor setback for Cesaro and Swagger.

As soon as Cesaro saw The Punjabi Giant down on the mat, he amazingly lifted the 347-pound Superstar by the legs and took him for an astonishing 11-revolution ride on the Cesaro Swing to secure the win.

The monstrous feat earned The Real Americans a tag team victory over The Great Khali & Santino Marella.

#4 No contest finish (2013)

Big Show levels everyone

At Battleground 2013, the main event was between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan. The two men were wrapped up in a rivalry at the time, from two PPV’s before. This was the third time that both men would face off and many people were hoping it was the last.

Admittedly the match was good, that was until the Big Shows music hit. I’m sure many people thought that the Big Show would disobey the Authority and Knock Randy out but nope, he K.O’d the referee, then Daniel, then the replacement referee and finally Randy himself.

The night left us with a main event with no finish and no champion. I’m sure many were surprised by this.

#3 Miz wins Intercontinental Championship (2014)

The Miz wins his third Intercontinental Championship

At Battleground 2014 there was a battle royal for the vacant Intercontinental Championship

As the battle royal for the intercontinental championship was under way bodies lay about inside and out of the ring. As The Miz and Sheamus were tussling, The Miz was sent flying out of the ring, but not over the top rope, and thus staying a legal competitor.

Lying in wait outside the ring for most of the bout, The Miz cleverly managed to be the last man standing to capture his third Intercontinental Championship.

What was most surprising about this was many thought this was going to be Dolph Ziggler's night, but it wasn’t meant to be.

#2 Luke Harper returning (2015)

The Wyatts are back together

The WWE had made the unpopular decision to split the Wyatt family up and to many fans it was a bit of a head-scratcher to say the least. But at Battleground 2015, Bray Wyatt faced off against Roman Reigns where quite a shock to many happened.

In the closing moments of the match, a hooded figure emerged and Superkicked Roman Reigns which allowed for Bray Wyatt to pick up the win over Reigns. When the hood man revealed himself to the crowd, it turned out to be non-other than Luke Harper himself, signifying the Wyatts were back together.

#1 Undertaker Returns

Undertaker takes out the Beast

Well, ok, it’s safe to assume that it would have taken an act of god for Seth Rollins to walk away from Battleground with the WWE title, but I don’t think anybody expected the return of The Undertaker.

In the closing moments of the match, just as Lesnar was covering a battered and beaten Rollins following an F5, the lights in the Scottrade Center cut to black, the bell tolled and The Undertaker made his return to WWE. He hit Lesnar with a low-blow and Tombstoned the Beast twice.

Everyone watching in attendance were in complete and utter shock, they didn’t know whether to boo or cheer for Taker seeing as Brock was a baby-face. One thing is for sure and that is that it was the biggest shock of a Battleground PPV ever.
