5 opponents for Edge after WWE WrestleMania 37

2021 Royal Rumble winner Edge went into WrestleMania with all the momentum of a projectile fired from one of those rail guns you see in sci-fi movies - i.e., a lot. However (and spoiler alert if you haven't watched night 2 of WrestleMania 37 which, if that's the case, why are you even reading this?), it wasn't the Rated R Superstar's night, as the Universal Champion (and guy who takes hairstyle advice from Bret Hart) Roman Reigns pinned both him and Daniel Bryan (at the same time) to win the main event of this year's Show of Shows.

Which begs the question: what does Edge do now? The Ultimate Opportunist had been driven by one simple goal since the Royal Rumble this year - win back what he never lost. Which would be the World Heavyweight Championship, which he had to vacate upon retiring nearly a decade ago. Now that he came up short tonight, what now?

With the following list, we're going to look at five different opponents Edge can go toe-to-toe with over the next couple of months or so. Starting with (what we feel are) the most obvious picks and working our way down, we're going to try and hammer out who we think we can expect to see the WWE Hall of Famer take on next.

Let's go.

#5. Edge vs Roman Reigns

While the Head of the Table showed at the end of WrestleMania 37 that he was more than capable of defeating two of WWE's best at the same time (literally, in fact), there's still a loose thread to this story.

When Edge won the 2021 Royal Rumble and selected which championship he wanted to challenge for in Tampa, he wasn't expecting to have another competitor included in the match.

Now, yes, this is pro wrestling and this is the kind of thing you have to expect here. However, in the context of this story, Edge is owed a 1-on-1 title match against Roman Reigns.

Argue against that all you want but, you have to admit, flimsier logic has been used to explain dumber plot threads in wrestling.

Overall, Edge has an argument that he should be allowed one more shot at Reigns' Universal Championship, and he also has a strong argument towards being allowed to pick a stipulation to prevent outside interference, considering what a major part that played in tonight's match.

Speaking of which...

#4. Edge vs Jey Uso

If the storyline powers-that-be aren't going to give Edge another shot at Roman's Universal Championship, it stands to reason that he'd want to take on the guy who cost him that shot in the first place.

Near the very end of the WrestleMania main event, Roman's cousin/right hand man/toadie Jey Uso attacked Edge, and set into motion the events that led to the champion retaining his title. If the Rated R Superstar can't take his frustration out on the champ, he might as well take it out on the champ's little buddy.

Outside of the story, a match between Edge and Jey Uso would be a lot of fun to watch. Uso has already proven he can hold his own in the ring, both while teaming with his brother as well as his matches with Roman. Uso can even be used as a gatekeeper, someone who Edge needs to beat before he gets another shot at the Universal Champion. It's a fairly predictable story, but it's wrestling - sometimes those are the stories that work best.

At some point, WWE is going to have to decide where they're going to go with this story of Jey Uso they started months ago - if they're even going to go anywhere with it. If they want to evolve his character at all, they couldn't ask for a better foil to play against than a legend like Edge.

#3. Edge vs Daniel Bryan

Not going to lie - I couldn't begin to tell you why WWE included Daniel Bryan in Edge's main event match at WrestleMania 37. I didn't have a problem with it - having Bryan involved always makes a match better, and he also deserved at least one more 'Mania main event. But, it's not like the match needed him - Edge vs Roman was already a ticket seller as it was.

When SmackDown starts this Friday night, there's a good chance that Edge is going to open the show - and it's probably safe to say he's going to want to pick a fight with somebody. And there's a good chance that somebody is the guy who threw a monkey wrench into his WrestleMania main event.

Now, a feud with Daniel Bryan isn't going to have legs - maybe some matches on SmackDown and a blow-off bout on a PPV - but it would still be a good way to wrap up some loose ends in the story they've been telling since January.

#2. Edge vs Damian Priest

Perhaps Edge will take on a fresher face next.

As much as the Internet was gushing (and rightfully so, mind you) over the wrestling performance of superstar musician Bad Bunny at WrestleMania, something that was a bit overlooked was the work his partner, former NXT North American Champion Damian Priest, brought to the match.

Maybe "obvious" isn't the right word but, for lack of a better one, it was "obvious" that pairing Bad Bunny up with Priest was a two-way street. Bad Bunny's fame outside of wrestling served to draw more eyes to the WWE product while associating Priest with him served to draw more eyes to someone WWE certainly has big plans for.

With Bunny going on tour (as announced during the show tonight), Priest needs something to do to keep that momentum going. A feud with Edge is the perfect way to go along those lines.

Both the Rated R Superstar and the Archer of Infamy have rock star-like personas that compliment each other well. Think back to when Priest won the North American Championship and celebrated by jumping into a hot tub with a couple of female admirers. Couldn't you see Edge, who had a "live sex celebration" with Lita years ago, doing the same thing?

Edge may have his own goals he wants to accomplish before he finally retires on his own terms, but a guy who has proven over and over how much he respects the wrestling business certainly would want to help put over some younger guys at the same time. Priest is one of those younger guys, and a program with the very first Money in the Bank winner would be a great way to go.

#1. Edge vs Bobby Lashley

Yeah, obviously we're talking about Edge going after a different belt. But this isn't just about the WWE Championship, although it's a big part of it. It really has less to do with Bobby Lashley and more to do with Edge and MVP.

Take a look at this clip from WWE Raw a year ago.

Since then, Edge has moved past his feud with Randy Orton and seemingly came up short in his quest to take the Universal Championship off of Roman Reigns. But if Edge wants to regain what he "never lost" well... that's closer to the WWE Championship than the Universal. After all, the belt he contested for at WrestleMania didn't even exist when he retired a decade ago.

And don't think MVP has forgotten about what happened in that video above. Having his greatest client, Bobby Lashley, destroy the man he both considered a friend and offered his services to last March has to be incredibly satisfying.

On top of all that, an Edge/Lashley match would be something special. While Edge - who isn't a weakling by any means - has a strength disadvantage against the All Mighty, he's also a master tactician and, well, opportunist. The mind games he could play against MVP and Lashley alone would make for must-see television.

Edge vs Lashley needs to headline one of the major PPVs this year, if not next year's WrestleMania.
