In sports, there's nothing quite like a dream match, with fans proposing who would win in a truly epic battle.

Whether it be Mike Tyson taking on Muhammad Ali, or the classic England '66 team against last year's French world cup winners, dream matches can be a hotly debated idea.

In professional wrestling, things are no different. With thousands upon thousands of wrestlers having graced a television screen at some point in time, there's no shortage of possible dream matches that could occur.

And with the WWE Universe now entering a new year, as well as a new era according to the McMahons, what better time is there to look at what shocking bouts may happen in 2019.

Here are five WWE dream matches that may just happen this year.

#5 Batista vs Brock Lesnar

When Batista returned to the WWE in 2014, the fans weren't exactly quite welcoming.

Through no fault of his own, Batista was pushed heavily, at the expense of Daniel Bryan, whom the fans had chosen as their hero.

Quitting the company in May, the Animal had said he hopes to compete again, and one man who would certainly give the former World Champion a challenge would be Brock Lesnar.

Whilst they've never competed on the main roster together, the Animal and the Beast have faced off before, both in OVW and a Monday Night RAW Live event in 2003.

With the score between the pair being 1-1, the Guardians of the Galaxy star could certainly give the Universal Champion a challenge, maybe at WrestleMania.

With Batista's rumored match against Triple H now off the table following the Game's injury at Crown Jewel, a Batista-Lesnar match would certainly attract a crowd.

#4 Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle

If Batista isn't available to be the Beast's next challenge, then Kurt Angle could make a great replacement.

Part of SmackDown during the brand's arguable high-point in the early 2000s, Angle and Lesnar are known rivals, competing for the title in the main event of WrestleMania 19.

Whilst both men may be considerably older now, it's safe to say a battle between the Olympic gold medalist and the Beast Incarnate would still be highly entertaining.

Angle has impressed in his few matches in WWE since returning in 2017, and Lesnar, though he receives criticism for his sporadic appearances as Universal Champion, always brings a must-see feel to all his matches.

If the WWE play their cards right, a Lesnar-Angle feud could be the biggest thing to see in 2019.

#3 John Cena vs. Samoa Joe

If John Cena is Mr. WWE, there are few wrestlers who could personify TNA more than Samoa Joe.

A former TNA World Champion, Joe joined the WWE in May 2015 and has certainly made a name for himself, holding the NXT Championship twice, and being one of RAW's top Superstars.

With Cena being a free agent, a clash between the two could be coming in 2019, and would certainly make headlines.

The Samoan Submission machine and Big Match John have had very different journeys in wrestling, though no-one can deny their success.

Yet to hold any gold on the main roster, Joe could certainly put himself in contention, if he was able to topple the 16-time World Champion, ideally at a huge pay per view such as WrestleMania or Summerslam.

#2 Shawn Michaels vs. AJ Styles

The Showstopper and the Phenomenal One are considered some of the all-time greats.

The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels' return to the ring at WWE Crown Jewel was a sight to behold.

After being retired by The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26, the Showstopper came out of exile to team with Triple H, to defeat the Deadman and his twister brother Kane.

Emerging victorious, fans have pondered who Michaels should face next, with many hoping for a WrestleMania match between HBK and the Phenomenal AJ Styles.

Whilst the WWE's first Grand Slam champion reportedly turned down the offer in 2017, seeing the two face off would be a true WrestleMania moment.

Styles isn't expected to win the WWE Championship at this Sunday's Royal Rumble pay per view, meaning the former TNA star is currently without a WrestleMania feud, a hole that could be filled by Mr. WrestleMania himself.

#1 Kurt Angle vs. Daniel Bryan

A sure-fire dream match, Bryan and Angle's technical prowess cannot be matched, unless by the other.

And yet, even a few years ago, a match between the two seemed impossible. Angle had been in Impact Wrestling for the majority of his career, and Bryan retired in 2016 due to injuries.

Yet here we are, two years later, with Kurt back in WWE (though still on leave) and Bryan thankfully, back in the squared circle, as WWE Champion no less, but a very different person than the man the WWE Universe once revered.

A match between the two would set fans' hearts ablaze, and with the Olympian saying in interviews he does hope to be a World Champion in WWE just one more time, a dream match between the two may not be too far away.
