A possible deal between Rey Mysterio and GFW is now seemingly off the table

What’s the story?

Following what seems like weeks of negotiations, it appears that talks between Rey Mysterio and GFW have ultimately fallen through.

As reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, “negotiations with GFW and Mysterio are no longer taking place” and “all talks of him coming in right now appear to be dead.”

In case you didn’t know…

Mysterio was rumoured to be in discussions with GFW as far back as mid-July when PWInsider.com reported that Mysterio had “a contract offer in his hands” from the company.

For whatever reason, it seems that deal was never signed, and though talk did persist of an “enticing offer” from GFW, word from the Observer is that any prospective deal between the two parties is now very much dead in the water.

Going in depth

The Observer also noted that there was a plan in place for Mysterio to face Alberto El Patron at Bound for Glory in November. The idea was that the company would build towards an apparent Jeff Jarrett vs. El Patron meeting, only for Mysterio to take Jarrett’s place on the night of the show and face off with El Patron himself.

However, given Mysterio’s heavy involvement with The Crash—the Mexican promotion with whom GFW have had a fair few issues in recent times—those plans now look well-and-truly off the cards.

What's next?

There’s currently no word on Mysterio’s next move, though Sports Illustrated recently warned against expecting to see him end up WWE-bound.

For GFW, on the other hand, if the reports are true then there’s work to be done in terms of finding a replacement opponent for El Patron at Bound for Glory. Thankfully, there are still over eight weeks to go until the show, so at least they’ve got a fair amount of time to play with.

Author’s take

While the GFW schedule may have suited Mysterio down to a tee, it appears that hopes of a deal have been dashed due to matters that stem (not for the first time) from outside of the ring.

Then again, given that this is pro wrestling we’re talking about, you can never say never when it comes to guys repairing bridges that were seemingly burned. Especially when the guy in question has a name as legendary as Rey Mysterio...
