Future of Cesaro – Looking back at the Paul Heyman guys

The new Paul Heyman guy - Cesaro

The new Paul Heyman guy – Cesaro

Unless you have been living under a rock, or have fallen off the face of the earth for the past two months, you’d know that Brock Lesnar did something no one saw coming at WrestleMania 30. As his on – screen manager/agent – one of the most devious masterminds in the history of the business, Paul Heyman loves to mention every week on – air, Lesnar “conquered” the most illustrious streak in sports entertainment today – The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania 30! The entire wrestling world stood still for a moment, and what followed was an outpour of mixed reactions – Not about the streak ending, but about the person responsible for ending it. Almost all the fans were irate about the streak ending at WrestleMania, as they believed that Taker deserved to retire while being undefeated at WrestleMania, an argument that most won’t argue with. Paul Heyman, to his credit has since mentioned that fact at every possible opportunity.

WrestleMania 30 will be remembered for various reasons – Rock, Austin and Hogan sharing a moment at the grandest stage, The Undertaker finally giving up his fortress and losing to Lesnar, and Daniel Bryan finally beating the odds to win the WWE World Heavyweight championship. Apart from that, WrestleMania 30 will also be remembered for the “King of Swing”, Cesaro winning Andre the Giant Memorial battle royal. Cesaro has always been a crowd favorite, and his impressive strength and physique meant that sooner rather than later, the WWE management would look to push him to the top. Before RAW after WrestleMania began, Mick Foley made a bold statement that the episode of RAW would see the WWE management doing just that – Push Cesaro.

WWE had to come up with something brilliant to elevate the stake of Cesaro in the company. Cesaro was already “over” with the fans – He was already popular among the wrestling faithful. Most of the “intelligent fans” have known him since his days as Claudio Castagnoli, and one half of arguably the greatest tag team in the independent circuit, the Kings of Wrestling. Knowing very well that the fans already have taken a liking to Cesaro, the WWE management decided to pair him with the one person who guarantees success to his clients. Whether you talk about legends such as Austin and Jericho, or the superstars who changed the pro wrestling business in the past decade such as Brock Lesnar and CM Punk, one person’s knack for finding and recognizing talent has been pivotal in changing the wrestling business. Not only that, but he has elevated these superstars’ status, and made them some of the biggest names in the history of the business. WWE paired Cesaro with none other than Paul Heyman.

The greatest thing about the wrestling business is the outcome of something organic – Which isn’t seen as a move by the management against the will of the fans, but something that the fans welcome and are genuinely happy about. WWE has always tried to tell the fans what to think, and in the process have made some mistakes. When Heyman announced Curtis Axel as his new client sometime ago, people were ambivalent – Everyone knows that Curtis is talented inside the ring, and Heyman was brought in to be the mouthpiece and the center of attention, something he did so well with Lesnar. That experiment ultimately failed, and WWE tried to do the same with Ryback, and even that backfired. WWE quickly tried to erase the fact that those storylines had ever taken place, and Heyman went back to managing Brock Lesnar.

The best thing about Heyman – Cesaro association is the fact that Cesaro is incredibly talented, and has all the charisma in the world. Cesaro has all the tools to break the shackles and become the face of the company – something that the WWE Universe would love as well. With Heyman’s brilliant vision and Cesaro’s talent, only sky is the limit for the Swiss superman. But it once again depends on how WWE decides to book Cesaro, something they didn’t do too well with the likes of Curtis Axel and Ryback. Axel’s first bout as Heyman’s new client saw him getting a DQ victory over Triple H – A beaten, concussed Triple H who, till the time he passed out, dominated the bout. The first rule of putting someone over is giving him the credibility, and showing the fans that he has what it takes to hang around with the big guys. WWE failed miserably in establishing Axel as a top talent, and the same happened with Ryback! In fact, it was bound to end badly, with Axel and Ryback losing most of their PPV matches, and the ones they won were either cheap victories, or due to outside interferences.

WWE to its credit haven’t done anything to ruin Cesaro’s reputation, not yet at least. Heyman and Cesaro’s association hasn’t set off a spark just yet, but it feels organic – Similar to Heyman’s association with CM Punk. If WWE books Cesaro as a credible threat under Heyman, there is every possibility that we can see him in the main event scene soon, which can then lead to a Cesaro – Lesnar program. With Lesnar breaking Taker’s streak, him putting Cesaro over would give an amazing rub to the strongman from Switzerland! If everything goes according to plan, there is no doubt in my mind that Cesaro will win the WWE World Heavyweight championship sometime within this year!
