What’s the story?
Nikki Bella and John Cena are set to take on The Miz and Maryse at WrestleMania 33. Though the idea was initially rejected by the fans, the intense build up to the bout has changed many opinions about the same.
There are speculations that the reason this match is happening at the Grandest Stage of Them All is because there is a marriage proposal on the cards. In a recent report by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it is stated that the main motive of the mixed tag match is indeed more than delivering sports entertainment.
In case you didn’t know...
Since her return, Nikki Bella has feuded with Carmella, Natalya and now Maryse. The focal point of all these feuds has been her relationship with John Cena and how she has received special attention from the management because of it.
All her rivals have mocked her relationship with the Cenation leader and have claimed that John Cena will never marry her.
The Miz and Maryse took this further by cutting various promos about the same and also producing clips from the shows Total Divas and Total Bellas, accentuating the same.
The heart of the matter
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it is believed that the reason that the mixed tag team match will be held at ‘Mania is because Cena will propose Nikki afterwards.
On multiple occasions, Nikki Bella’s opponents have pointed out that Cena will never marry her. It is believed that if Cena does propose, it will not only give a big moment to this year’s ‘Mania but it will also serve as a build up to the next season of ‘Total Divas’.
It is further believed that the Cena-Bella segments will generate more reaction than anything else on the show.
It will also help WrestleMania 33 deliver a huge moment despite the absence of Shaq, Conor McGregor and other high-profile celebrities that were initially expected to appear at the event.

John Cena and Nikki Bella will face The Miz and Maryse in a mixed tag team match at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando, Florida.
This will be Maryse’s first match in a WWE ring in almost six years. The match is also rumoured to be Nikki Bella’s last match as it is speculated that her injuries won’t let her continue as a professional wrestler any further.
Author’s Take
Frankly speaking, I was disappointed when the Undertaker vs Cena match was called off in favour of this one. WWE chose to provide a young Superstar with extraordinary momentum instead of providing fans with a dream match.
Due to his age, there is a huge possibility that The Undertaker will never compete again after WrestleMania 33, which means that the WWE would have deprived the WWE Universe of a match which could have been an instant classic.
However, I would take a moment to appreciate how SmackDown’s creative has successfully mitigated the damage by putting Cena in a program with the Miz.
The promos have been fantastic and very intriguing. Though the result of the match is somewhat predictable, the build-up to the match has produced some really good television content and has managed to build hype for a match which looked very uninteresting on paper.
If the marriage proposal does take place at the Camping World Stadium, it will truly be a moment that we won’t be able to forget for many years.
