John Cena had been separated from the WWE Championship at New Year's Revolution 2006 due to troublesome boos which had begun plaguing his career.

The cheers had returned somewhat in the three weeks since and WWE made the call to put the title back on Cena at the Royal Rumble.

Cena defeated Edge in a decent battle to regain the gold.

However, the boos returned in Cena's next feud with Triple H. "The Game" belittled Cena at every turn in the promotion to their main event WrestleMania collision, so it was not surprising in hindsight that Cena silenced his tormenter in a good match at the big show. However, at the time Triple H's loss was a colossal shock to fans.

Edge was inserted into the title picture once more by virtue of his violent victory over Mick Foley at 'Mania. However, Cena retained the belt once more in an impressive triple threat encounter over Edge and Triple H at Backlash.

However, the boos would rain down on Cena like never before in his title losing bout with Rob Van Dam at ECW One Night Stand on June 11, 2006.

Fans chucked Cena's T-shirt back at him several times and subjected him to obscenely abusive chants as he succumbed to RVD's Five Star Frogsplash.

Cena's second reign had ended after five months.
