The Smarky Awards: Money In The Bank 2013

WWE Money in the Bank Logo

That was one hell of a PPV! For the 3rd PPV in a row, WWE has delivered and given us some great matches with some awesome moments. Per usual, I will tell you who, I believe, did the best at Money In The Bank and what matches and feuds stood out.

Best Match Award

Winner: WWE Championship Money In The Bank Match

In the PPV’s main event, six larger than life superstars clashed in an awe-inspiring battle for the briefcase. In a match filled with painful looking spots (three of the participants got injured), great false finishes, and a whole lot of story-telling, Randy Orton would strike RVD with and RKO and ascend the ladder to retrieve his first Money In The Bank briefcase. From RVD’s return to the big stage to Daniel Bryan going apeshit of everybody, this match was captivating from beginning to end.

Best Feud Award

Winner: John Cena vs. Mark Henry

While the ending of the match itself was pretty bad, the whole feud that led to Money In The Bank was spectacular. From the moment Mark Henry did his amazing retirement speech swerve, WWE fans everywhere became immediately invested of what could have been the culmination of a 15 year career. As I said, the ending wasn’t the greatest thing in the world, but the build-up was awesome and featured some of Mark Henry’s best work of his career.

Best Diva Award

Winner: AJ Lee

I guess the moral of the story is that sometimes the bully wins. In the second match of our first real Divas feud in years, AJ Lee made Kaitlyn tap out to a devastating looking Black Widow hold, reassuring everybody that she is still the top Diva in the company. Not only that, but it looks like she is on her way to feuding with former boyfriend and former two time World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler. Talk about having an impact.

Biggest Loser Award

Winner(?): Cody Rhodes

Ever since the Money In The Bank PPV started, Cody Rhodes has been a favourite to win every time, and every time he comes up short. While it seems that this year’s Money In The Bank match almost centred around the son of a ‘son of a plumber’, he still ended up getting shoved off the ladder by former friend Damien Sandow when he was finger tips away from finally capturing the briefcase. He may be a loser right now, but it looks like Cody Rhodes is in line for a big face push this summer, which can only mean good things for the well-deserving Rhodes’ career.

Best Superstar Award

Winner: Randy Orton

For the past year and a half or so, Orton has been stuck in limbo. Meaningless feuds, midcard regulation, and repetitive matches have been bringing the Viper down. But the past few months have seen a rebirth of the Viper. He has been having interesting feuds, awesome matches, and he is starting to become interesting. Money In The Bank furthered Orton’s new push when he climbed to the top of the ladder to retrieve the Money In The Bank briefcase. Not only is this the start of something great for the Viper, it’s the start of something great for the fans.
