Considered one of the greatest rivalries in WWE history, John Cena vs. The Rock has left a lasting impression on fans worldwide. Their storyline stemming from Cena questioning The Rock's commitment to wrestling, led to two epic main events at WrestleMania. But they were also a team once during the whole saga.

John Cena and The Rock's first tag team match is misunderstood to be against The Wyatt Family at WrestleMania 32. Both superstars did ally to pulverize Bray Wyatt's forces, but it wasn't an official match. Their once-in-a-lifetime tag team showdown occurred on November 20, 2011.

The two-generational icons defeated Awesome Truth (The Miz and R-Truth) at Survivor Series in a 20-minute slobber knocker. The Cenation Leader was the active competitor for most of the match and was almost pinned many times. Eventually, The Brahma Bull ended the proceedings with a spinebuster followed by the People's Elbow on The Miz. Post-match, he laid out Cena with a Rock Bottom.

The build-up to The Rock and John Cena's tag team is worth mentioning. During the October 24, 2011, edition of RAW, Zack Ryder was attacked backstage by Awesome Truth. This left Cena devoid of a partner.

When former Interim General Manager John Laurinaitis asked The Cenation Leader if he had an ally in mind for Survivor Series, he chose The Great One as his partner on the crowd's insistence.

WWE legends John Cena and The Rock almost came to blows backstage

Dwayne Johnson and John Cena had a personal rivalry brewing in early 2009. The Rock took offense to the Cenation Leader's kayfabe claims that he 'abandoned' WWE for Hollywood. After all, he tried his best to remain in the wrestling business despite his hectic acting schedule.

During an interview with Muscle And Fitness magazine, The Rock revealed the backstage tension between him and the 16-time World Champion during the build-up to their WrestleMania 28 fight.

"Through all that edge and attitude and bite that we had and nearly coming to blows backstage and one night in the ring — literally we were nose-to-nose, it was any second. And through that, in a crazy, weird completely unexplained way, we became great buds.” [H/T Washington Post]

The heat between the two megastars has subsided. Cena regrets some of his actions of the past, while Dwayne Johnson has nothing but respect for his friend. He praised his discipline and wrestling consistency back when John was still WWE's poster boy.
