Baron Corbin’s promotion to the main roster has been underwhelming to say the least. His victory at the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal got a good reaction from fans but his three month long feud against Dolph Ziggler since that night has been tepid at best.
Corbin and Ziggler have now met each other three pay-per-views in a row and the crowd reaction has gotten progressively worse with the crowd chanting ‘boring’ during their match at Money In The Bank.
It's not hard to see what WWE see in Corbin, he has the size and the look but the actual wrestling ability isn’t quite there yet, which isn’t Corbin’s fault. His call-up to the main roster came up before he was ready, which is sad because he was doing some really good work down in NXT and progressing as a performer.
With Corbin now on the main roster, WWE has to book him smartly in the coming months after a disappointing run following his debut or he risks becoming another Brodus Clay. Corbin has to be booked strongly in the lead up to SummerSlam with hopefully a better spot than pre-show.
In keeping with that, here are 5 booking steps for Corbin on the road to SummerSlam.
#5 Social Outcasts
The first thing WWE has to do following the Corbin-Ziggler program is to give him a few squash matches and who’s better to stare up at the lights for him than WWE’s resident jobbers, The Social Outcasts.
Corbin’s size and dominance has to be established and he has to be made to look like a believable threat. A few short matches against Curtis Axel, Bo Dallas and Heath Slater would get him started once again on the road to being a dominant force.
The Social Outcasts aren’t really doing anything right now anyway so facing Corbin would at least get them on television again.
#4 Kalisto
Kalisto is a very talented cruiserweight wrestler with the potential to become this generation’s Rey Mysterio if given the chance. However, his run with the Unites States Championship was a disaster and has sadly devalued the belt John Cena spent so many months elevating.
In the last few months, Kalisto has made Rusev look like an absolute monster and he could do the same for Baron Corbin if the two are booked to face each other. Kalisto’s speed and smaller stature taking on Corbin’s size and power should bring an interesting dynamic and the match will be faster paced unlike Corbin’s plodding program with Ziggler.
#3 Sami Zayn
The next babyface on Corbin’s path of destruction has to be Sami Zayn. Sami Zayn is one of the most talented in-ring wrestlers in the WWE right now and should lead the greener Corbin to an exciting match.
Zayn has shown us what he can do with a series of sensational matches so far this year against the likes of Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles and Cersaro. If anyone can help Corbin look good, its Sami Zayn.
The match between the two should be excellent as we’ve already seen during their time together in NXT and could be Corbin’s next pay-per-view match at Battleground but hopefully not in the pre-show.
#2 Sheamus
Following a victory over Sami Zayn at Battleground, Corbin would find a new cockiness following his recent run of victories which would irk Sheamus who would see him as an exponent of ‘the New Era’ coming to take his place.
Sheamus would lash out at Corbin, blindsiding him in a vicious backstage attack which would lead to them having a No Disqualification match on an episode of Raw for the #1 Contendership to the Intercontinental Title.
Corbin and Sheamus would slug it in a hard-hitting match with Corbin eventually pinning Sheamus after the End of Days. Corbin would claim the #1 contendership and challenge The Miz at SummerSlam in a heel vs heel showdown.
#1 The Miz
Baron Corbin and The Miz would complement each other really well. Miz, the veteran and self-proclaimed Hollywood A-lister, who after years of losing has finally returned to winning ways inside the ring partly thanks to his wife Maryse who now accompany’s him.
In the other corner, Baron Corbin. Corbin’s the new kid on the block, powerful and relentless, yet a lone wolf looking to step over his opponents on his way to the top.
Although the match would be heel vs heel, the dynamic would be really interesting especially as to how the crowd reacts. Will they be behind The Miz or Corbin? Inside the ring, Corbin would have the size and strength advantage but the cowardly Miz has speed, experience and Maryse at ringside.
The match should be really good with Corbin ending up with the victory and the Intercontinental Championship. With the white IC title belt hanging from his shoulder, Corbin will finally have arrived.
