There have been a few things in the WWE that has lost grounds over the years.Be it the prestigious Intercontinental title, US belt or the decreasing importance of the divas division, they all have failed to impress the WWE universe in general for a long period now.It was only Dolph Ziggler’s involvement in the IC title picture recently that has regenerated some enthusiasm among the fans and helped in making the belt relevant again. However, the Divas division continues to struggle and along with that we can also include the tag-team division which has also become monotonous these days especially after The Usos long reign. The situation hasn’t changed a lot since Goldust and Stardust won the titles as there hasn’t been any serious competition from others.Regardless of the title belts, The Shield and The Wyatt Family were the two factions that outshone everyone and left a lasting impression on the WWE universe even though their tenure together was short lived. Here, we take a look at the five best tag teams of this year.

#5 Miz and Mizdow

Who would’ve thought that in a year when Sandow was having a Zack Ryder-esque fall with his many duplicate roles each and every week after he lost his Money In The bank cash in to Cena, that he will have one of the most entertaining gimmicks of the year.

And he rose by just copying what Miz was doing and became better at being The Miz than Miz. To Miz’s credit, Sandow couldn’t have gotten over if he was just about anybody’s sidekick. It is apt to have a stunt double for a self proclaimed Hollywood superstar.

The best thing is that this tag team actually has a lot to look forward to. There is the authority that Miz walks with, the adulation that Mizdow walks away with. There might be some jealousy involved as well. There is a storyline that can lead these two to part ways.

The interesting part has been that even though Miz is in charge, both of these characters have an equal role to play and emphasize upon. Their matches haven’t really been much special. But everything apart from that has been.

#4 The Usos

There hasn’t been any team as wildly energetic as The Usos. Adding to that, WWE came out with a documentary on these brothers. They did win the tag team championship this year, but their reign did not have much to talk about. It got lost in what usually many feuds get lost into. But their performance in almost every match that they’ve been part of has been something to watch out for.

They have been involved in matches more than promos and their matches with Ryback and Curtis Axel and especially Erick Rowan and Luke Harper have been great. The in-ring chemistry with the latter team has to be one of the best.

What made their first title victory special was the fact that they emphasised on being young blood compared to veterans Billy Gunn and Road Dogg. That has to be a feud with a good build up which led many to eagerly await for an Uso title reign.

#3 Goldust and Stardust

What has been the most intriguing part of this team this year, is the transformation of Cody Rhodes and the way he has dedicated himself to it. Goldust is no longer the weird one in the family.

Add to that the ageless nature of Goldust’s in ring performances. He has been great in all of his matches. It really doesn’t look like he has been away from the ring for such a long time. This has to be one of the greatest and seamless comebacks ever. It’s like he never left.

Stardust, on the other hand, has been one of the most interesting characters this year. With his red contact lenses and over the top expressions, his team was able to capture the tag team gold for the second time. They, however, lost to the tag team of the moment- Miz and Mizdow.

The biggest takeaway from this team is the curiousity about what these two are going to say in their wierd promos like the ones where Stardust was introduced and he talks about himself combined with their in-ring skills.

#2 The Ascension

There is always this one set of or one performer that stands out in NXT and the fans await when he or she will make their main roster debut and take it away by storm. Paige has been in that conversation, so have Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt and Seth Rollins. Sami Zayn and Charlotte are next.

The Ascension has been a part of that discussion as well. They have been the most dominating team in the tag team division of NXT ever since they made their presence felt. They will finally make their debut as a promo on them has already been aired.

Their matches against Travis Tyler and Cal Bishop, Wesley Blake, Jack Hurley and John Vandal etc. have been a showcase of sheer dominance. If anyone is NXT took squash matches to a whole new level, it was Viktor and it was Konnor.

They have been compared to The Road Warriors and Demolition. Their video promo may have reminded many of The Road Warriors.

#1 The Shield

Sure, they broke up but up until then they became part of some of the best feuds and matches of the year against The Wyatt Family and Evolution. The reason the latter teams are not in this list is because these teams have a clear leader who had more character than the other two members of the teams.

The Shield had three very different characters who were equally cool and intriguing at the same time. Currently, in their individual form, all of them are contesting as main eventers in the WWE

This year saw them address the differences in the team, specifically between Ambrose and Reigns, making the eventual split at the hands of Rollins all the more memorable. Their rise against Triple H and Co. led to many a ‘This Is Awesome’ premises. And every match against the Wyatts was a must see bout on TV.

For however long it lasted, it was one hell of a journey.
