The One Piece anime recently became the first TV show to have over 230 episodes with a 9+ rating on IMDb. With 1114 episodes released, the anime has around 20% of its episodes rated at this range. While the ratio may not seem interesting, the sheer fact that the series has episodes with similar ratings across a quarter of a decade makes it an incredible achievement.
One Piece anime follows the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy with Devil Fruit powers who departs his home years after meeting the legendary pirate Red-haired Shanks to become a pirate himself. During this journey, he recruits the members of the Straw Hat Pirates, all of whom support him in his journey to find the One Piece.
One Piece anime becomes first TV show with 230 episodes rated over 9 stars
Following the recent release of One Piece episode 1112, titled 'Clash! Shanks vs. Eustass Kid,' the anime became the first television show to have 230 episodes with 9+ ratings on IMDb.
One Piece anime has released a total of 1114 episodes. Thus, one may think that the anime having 230 high-rated episodes, which is about 20% of the catalogue, should be considered normal.
However, unlike most shows, the series has been airing since 1999. Hence, the series has likely experienced the most cultural changes throughout its release. Despite all that, having about 20% of episodes in the 9+ rating category is impressive.
The surprising thing is that, despite having 230 episodes with 9+ ratings, none of the episodes are rated 10. However, that could be the result of review bombing by fans from other anime fandoms.
How fans reacted after learning about One Piece anime's achievement
Many fans were elated to see One Piece anime's achievement as it was their favorite anime. This was followed by a lot of praise for the anime, effectively claiming it to be a level above its competition.
"What you expected from one piece," one fan said.
However, most fans did not share this view as it wasn't a fair comparison to other anime. Most anime do not even have a total of 200 episodes, thus comparing them to a series with over 1000 episodes did not seem fair.
"How many other shows have more than 1000 episodes though? Percentage wise that's 20%. I'm fairly certain other anime out there can easily hit that same percentage lol," another fan argued.
"well barely any shows have ever gone on as long so I mean... hardly much of a fair comparison tbh," another fan added.
Moreover, having 230 episodes with 9+ ratings despite having released 1114 episodes, effectively meant that the anime only had 20% of episodes rated highly by fans. This was the least expected from the series. Hence, fans weren't really impressed by the achievement.
In comparison, anime like Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen had around 50% of episodes in the 9+ ratings but fans seldom sang praises about the same online.
