Ballard polished his skills under head coach Jake Gilbert at Westfield High School, earned a mention on the 6A All-State Team, and won the 2022 Indiana All-Academic Player honor.

Cole Ballard commenced his collegiate career with the Kansas Jayhawks in 2023. During the freshman season, he played four games and significantly helped the Jayhawks with his prowess. Ballard demonstrated his dual-threat capabilities against Kansas State, he threw 11 successful passes to register 162 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 55 yards in just 10 attempts. He finished that season with 286 passing yards and one touchdown.
