He appeared in the final 10 games of the season and made his full collegiate debut against UCF. Smith made two pivotal plays against the Oklahoma Sooners and helped them win the Bedlam game 27-24. He also recovered a fumble and made four tackles during that game. Smith made an interception against Kansas and assisted the Cowboys to a monumental victory. Throughout his freshman season, Smith accounted for 21 total stops, out of which 15 were solo, and contributed at least one stop in all nine games.

Smith was ranked as the No. 55 cornerback in the nation and the No. 82 overall in Texas by Rivals. Smith chose Oklahoma State over some of the top programs such as Arkansas, Nebraska, and Stanford.
