The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be played in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from February 19, 2025, to March 9, 2025. Eight teams will compete to claim the trophy. While Pakistan qualified for the tournament by virtue of being the hosts, the remaining seven teams earned their respective tickets to the marquee tournament by competing in the top seven in the ICC Men’s Cricket World 2023.

The ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy will see Afghanistan debut in the tournament. Meanwhile, former champions Sri Lanka and the West Indies will not feature in the upcoming installment of the ICC Champions Trophy. The tournament has been divided into two stages: Groups & Knockout (semi-finals + final).

ICC Champions Trophy's format

ICC Champions Trophy group stage

Acording to ESPN Cricinfo, eight teams will be divided into two groups of four each. Each team will play the other three sides once. In case of a tie, successive Super Overs will be played to determine the winner. A team will gain two points for a win, one for NR/abandoned/tie followed by abandonment of the Super Over. In case of a defeat, a team will get 0 points.

In case, two teams finish on equal points, the ordering of teams will be decided as per the following criteria:

  • The team with the most wins will be allocated the higher position.

  • If two teams end on equal points and equal wins, they will be ordered with respect to the Net Run Rate (NRR).

  • In the event of the NRRs being the same, or if all matches of a group get abandoned, the progression to the knockout stage will be determined by the original group seedings.

ICC Champions Trophy Knockouts

The Knockout stage will consist of two parts- semi-finals & final.

ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals:

The first semi-final will be held between A1 and B2 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on March 4. The second semi-final will take place between A2 and B1 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on March 5. If Pakistan qualify for the semis, their match will be held in Lahore. Meanwhile, if India makes it to the top four, they will play their semi-final in Dubai.

In the event of a semi-final being tied, the winner will be decided via subsequent Super Overs. In case, the inclement weather does not permit the completion of the Super Overs or if the match is abandoned at the end of the reserve day, the team that finished at a higher position in the group stage will qualify for the summit clash.
