Hosts England held their nerve in a close encounter to win their maiden World Cup title against New Zealand in a match that was worthy of a final as part of the World Cup 2019 at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.

The tournament certainly lived up to expectations that came along with it at the start of this edition. From batsmen hitting scintillating centuries to bowlers taking hat-tricks, from high-scoring games to some thrilling tight finishes, all of it culminated into a nail-biting final clash as England were crowned as the new champions.

Apart from fantastic team performances, there were also a number of players who stood out with a top-notch exhibition of their skill set. Now that the World Cup is done and dusted, it is a good time to look back at the top performers of the tournament.

Here is the team of the tournament, based on the performances in the World Cup 2019.

#1 Rohit Sharma - India

Rohit Sharma was without a shadow of doubt, the best batsman in this World Cup. The Indian vice-captain hit the straps right from game one where he scored a hundred in challenging conditions against South Africa.

Post that knock, Rohit was simply unstoppable. He scored 648 runs in 9 games at a phenomenal average of 81 and a strike-rate close to 100. The most intriguing part of Rohit's batting was the number of centuries that he hit in this edition. While he equalled Sachin Tendulkar's record of the most number of centuries in World Cup history, he now has the record of notching up the highest number of centuries in a single World Cup edition to his name.

#2 David Warner - Australia

Joe Root

Joe Root might not be the most attacking batsman going around but he keeps proving that ODI cricket is not all about power. In a batting line-up boasting of the world's best power-hitters, Root played the role of an anchor.

Root once again demonstrated his class with the bat by scoring 556 runs in 11 games at an average of 61.77. His strike-rate of 89.53 suggested that he didn't allow the opposition bowlers to put pressure when he was at the crease.

#4 Kane Williamson (Captain) - New Zealand

New Zealand's batting was a huge let down this World Cup, barring Kane Williamson's assurity in the middle order.

The top-order looked completely out of sorts and if it wasn't for Williamson's class, the Kiwis certainly wouldn't have made it to the finals. Everytime the New Zealand skipper came to bat, his team was under pressure.

However, he maneuvered the ball, picked the gaps and kept New Zealand in the game. He finished the tournament with 578 runs at a jaw-dropping average of 82.57. Apart from his batting, Williamson led his side beautifully, especially in high-pressure games, like the one against India in the semi-final.
