After some riveting encounters and a host of permutations and combinations in speculation for a semi-final berth, we have the four semi-finalists of World Cup 2019, with India, Australia, England and New Zealand advancing to the next stage. While India will be taking on New Zealand at Manchester in the first semi-final, Australia look to lock horns with England at Birmingham for the second spot in the World Cup final.

It is not for the first time that these four nations have made it to this stage of the tournament. While England have made it to the top 4 of the World Cup after a hiatus of 27 years, India and New Zealand have reached the semi-final for the third and fourth consecutive time respectively. Australia will be featuring in their fourth semi-final of the five World Cups held in this decade. As these sides prepare to battle it out among themselves for the coveted World Cup Final spots, let us have a look at their previous semi-final records in the tournament:

#4 New Zealand

New Zealand have not had a great record in World Cup semi-finals
New Zealand have not had a great record in World Cup semi-finals

New Zealand has been one of the most consistent teams of the World Cup, making it regularly to the semi-final stage. The Kiwis have broken into the final four on seven occasions (prior to this World Cup). They qualified for the semi-finals in 1975 and 1979, but could not manage to qualify in the next two editions. They featured once again in the top four in 1992, and returned again in 1999. Missing out on the spot in 2003, they have been regularly qualifying since then, and are all set to play their eighth World Cup semi final at Manchester against India

However, New Zealand have not seemed to find winning ways once they enter this phase of the tournament. After losing their first six games, the Kiwis finally broke the semi-final jinx in 2015, outperforming South Africa in a thriller. They would be keen on making it to their second consecutive final as they take field on the 9th of July at the Old Trafford Cricket Stadium.

#3 England

England have made it to the World Cup semi-final after 27 years
England have made it to the World Cup semi-final after 27 years

England, hailed to be the birthplace of cricket, is one of the traditional powerhouses of the sport. Although they lost their dominant status in the ODI circuit for some time, they have regained it, with a complete change in their approach since the marquee event in 2015. Pitted to be the tournament favourites, they have made it to the semi-final after a gap of 27 years.

England featured in the final four in the first five editions of the World Cup, from 1975 to 1992. Post that, they were not able to breach the mark, until their recent exploits in the present edition.

England have cleared the semi-final stage thrice, in 1979, 1987 and 1992, while losing in 1975 and 1983 against Australia and India respectively. They would be eager to improve on this record when they take the field in the second semi-final on the 11th of July against India/Australia at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

#2 Australia

Australia enjoy an unbeaten record in the World Cup semi-finals
Australia enjoy an unbeaten record in the World Cup semi-finals

The five-time World Champions are an indomitable force when it comes to ICC tournaments, and are even lethal at the World Cup. They have featured in 7 semi-finals (prior to this World Cup), and have the distinction of being unbeaten in all of them.

Australia qualified for the semi-finals in the maiden World Cup in the inaugural edition in 1975. After missing out on the next two chances, they made a comeback to the semis in 1987, when they went on to lift their maiden title. After an underwhelming display in 1992, they again featured in the final four in 1996, and since then, have been a part of all the World Cup semi-finals except 2011.

While Australia has won 6 of these 7 matches, one has ended in a tie, with the Kangaroos still making it to the final with a superior record in the Super Six stage. Aaron Finch's men would be hoping to maintain their unbeaten record in this stage, as they face arch-rivals England at Edgbaston on 11th July.

#1 India

India hold a decent record in the World Cup semi-finals
India hold a decent record in the World Cup semi-finals

India have qualified for the World Cup semi-finals on six occasions (before this World Cup). They made it to the final four stage for the first time in 1983, when they went on to win the title. Post that, they broke into the top 4 in every alternate edition - 1987 1996, 2003, and 2011. India has been very consistent after the 2011 World Cup, and have made qualified for the third consecutive time since then.

India have a decent record at the semi-finals of the World Cup. While they have emerged victorious on three occasions, they have endured hard luck in the other three.

Led by Virat Kohli, the Men in Blue would hope to increase their winning percentage as they face New Zealand at the Old Trafford on 9th July.
