England then beat Argentina in the first knockout stage of the tournament.

This helped them progress to the Semi-finals. England faced Portugal in the Semi-finals and beat them with a scoreline of 2-1 to reach the finals of the 1966 FIFA World Cup alongside West Germany. The finals played was one for the ages, with the match being sent into extra-time after Wolfgang Weber scored an equaliser in the 89’ to make it 2-2.

Although West Germany were able to send the match into extra-time, they were not able to hold England much longer as two goals by Geoff Hurst in extra-time saw him complete his hattrick and lead England to their first and only ever FIFA World Cup Trophy.
