After their win over Chelsea, can Manchester City overcome their trip to Newcastle?

Newcastle United will welcome the reigning Premier League champions to St. James’ Park this weekend, as Pep Guardiola’s men will look to gain some ground on current league leaders Liverpool with a victory. City’s last league game saw them defeat currently fourth-placed side Chelsea in what was a key victory for them coming off their loss to Liverpool, while Newcastle disappointed greatly in their loss away to 15th placed Aston Villa.

Another loss for Steve Bruce’s Magpies would be worrying as – if results go the wrong way for them – it could see them slip as low as 17th in the table by the end of the weekend.

Newcastle and Manchester City’s head-to-head record is largely even; 72 wins for the Magpies, 68 wins for City and 39 draws. Recent years have seen dominance for City, who did the double over Newcastle in 2017/18 – but their most recent meeting resulted in the Magpies handing them one of just four defeats in 2018/19.

Newcastle United vs. Manchester City Predicted XI

Newcastle United Predicted XI (5-4-1): Martin Dubravka, Jetro Willems, Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez, Deandre Yedlin, Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron, Joelinton

Manchester City Predicted XI (4-3-3): Ederson, Joao Cancelo, John Stones, Fernandinho, Benjamin Mendy, Kevin De Bruyne, Rodrigo, David Silva, Riyad Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling

Newcastle United vs. Manchester City Prediction

It’s hard to see anything but a win for Manchester City here; Newcastle will likely set up deep and attempt to catch Pep Guardiola’s men on the break, but judging by their recent game against Aston Villa their finishing is likely to be too profligate to do too much damage to City, while their defence likely won’t be able to cope with City’s phenomenal attack. Even without Sergio Aguero, the likes of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne are too dangerous to keep quiet.

Verdict: Newcastle United 0-3 Manchester City
