Excerpts from all the managerial reaction from an eventful day in the English Premier League on Saturday with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho saying he made “11 mistakes”.
Newcastle United 2-0 Chelsea
Alan Pardew: “I just asked (Yohan Cabaye) to hit it on the back of their back four with shape and a bit of pace because we weren’t really getting any joy from balls going into their box. He went for glory, really, but he executed it on the money and I am not going to try to take any credit for that. You have to be a top, top player to hit that ball in, and Gouff(ran) connected brilliantly and gave us a platform then.”
Jose Mourinho: “I made 11 mistakes, 11 mistakes. I should have picked another 11 and not this one. I made 11 mistakes. It’s the feeling I have. When my team plays so badly, it’s the feeling I have. I’m exaggerating. Of course we had some guys with, I am not saying outstanding, but with some normal, good performances, but the feeling is that I made 11 wrong choices.”
“Of course, of course I am worried, and I read in previous years, it happened the same. They (Chelsea) were successful in cup competitions, they were not successful in the Premier League. They finished 20 points behind, they finished 15 points behind. They qualified for the Champions League because they won the Champions League, but they finished fifth or sixth in the league….. Of course it concerns me.”
Arsenal 2-0 Liverpool

Arsene Wenger: “It was a convincing win against a good team, and that’s what we wanted. Of course everybody was waiting to see how we responded today, and we did that in a very positive manner. We got a good goal, and after that I felt we had many opportunities to make the difference and then Ramsey scored a stunning goal, but we had chances before and after.”
“It’s positive and nice but of course it’s very early in the season. It’s good for the confidence of the team and for the ambition as well. Hopefully it gets everybody around the team to support us and continue to do that.”
Brendan Rodgers: “I thought the best team won. Their mobility and passing was better than ours and we could’ve done better with the two goals. We kept going all night, the players have been brilliant in their application. They went right to the end. We created chances, we just couldn’t put the ball in the net.
“I think what we can see is my players have been brilliant in this opening period, we’re going to be be in with a shout. We understand the competition is great, but so far we’ve shown enough that we can be in with a fighting chance of the top four and that’s what we’ll be aiming to do. We’re in that top four, we’ve just got to put this game to bed, learn from it and win our next game.”

Manuel Pellegrini: “My duty is to see, every week, which are the best players to play every game. We have a lot of games. This game, I thought Joe (Hart) needed a rest. I think it will be useful for him. He has played every match for the last two and a half years here. We will work hard behind Joe so he can return to his normal performance level as soon as possible but (against Norwich) I thought the best goalkeeper was (Costel) Pantilimon, nothing more.”
“It was a really good performance. The team played really well during the 90 minutes, not only the first half. Normally when winning 4-0 at half-time, in the second half a team finish or stop. But the team continued playing exactly the same and that’s very important for me.
Chris Hughton: “It is hurting at this moment. We have let down the supporters who have travelled to Manchester. “It was difficult from start to finish against Manchester City. We knew the quality they had and they showed that today, but you have to be resilient and you cannot concede the goals we did. By our standards they were too soft, except the Yaya Toure free-kick and one that was offside. I hope it is a one-off but there have been a couple of games of late where we have conceded goals. We need to address it as soon as possible.”
Fulham 1-3 Manchester United

Martin Jol: “Lonely, very lonely. We had aspirations, we were ambitious before the game. We really wanted to do well. I’ve got a great team with a great team spirit. Dimitar Berbatov was skippering us again, so he wanted to win as a captain. The players wanted to win for him and maybe a little bit for me and for the club. To concede goals like that looked horrendous.”
David Moyes: “It was a good victory, an important victory for us. It gets you three points and hopefully we will try and continue doing that and keep the momentum building. Our job is to climb the league table. We want to get the nearer the top and I have got no doubt that by the end of the season we will. Where we are right now I don’t think is really that important, except that you don’t want to let the teams get too far away from you and we’ve got to try and make sure they don’t. We’re going to have keep building on today’s performance and the performances of the last week or so.”
West Ham United 0-0 Aston Villa

Sam Allardyce: “After three home defeats on the trot it was very important we didn’t lose. We tried to win it but we didn’t find the quality to put the ball into the net. We delivered 38 balls into the box, but it’s a spell we are having where we can’t find the net. In the last two home games we have conceded three in both so it was vital to get back to keeping clean sheets. There’s only one thing missing, and that’s scoring a goal or two, but we are only a small margin away from being a three-point team instead of a one-point team.”
Paul Lambert: “I have spoken to Howard (Webb) and I respect his view and know where he is coming from. If the ball is on the safe side (goal side) it is difficult to win it. I respect his decision and the way he saw it. I just thought from my angle it might have been (a foul). I have to respect his answer. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t.”

Mark Hughes: “It was a fortunate goal, quite bizarre really, and we were grateful for it. I think he just wanted to get his foot through it. You could tell as soon as the two centre-halves made the decision to let it bounce the goalkeeper was going to be in trouble because it took a hop, skip and a jump and he was never going to get anywhere near it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a goalkeeper do that, which was great for us.”
“We weren’t expecting our goalkeeper to do it for us but give him credit it was a great strike and he is very pleased with it. He is looking to score a few more he tells me.”
Mauricio Pochettino: “As a manager that is the first time I’ve had to experience a moment as unlucky as that. I don’t blame (Boruc) at all. I think it had more to do with the weather conditions, it was something completely unexpected, but we are aware these things can happen in football. He didn’t apologise for anything because he didn’t have to. The wind was changing gusts completely all the time and it is a ground which is open on three sides which makes it even more windy. It was a really tough game in terms of the weather conditions.”

Steve Bruce: “Thankfully (Lee Cattermole) is not mine to manage anymore. (But) we all know what I think of Lee as a player. One thing Lee’s got to curb is that red mist that comes down. We know you can’t make that challenge in today’s football, you just can’t make it. He’s got to learn that and I’m sure he will… eventually. In my day it might have been a booking but the directive is that if you leave the floor with studs showing, even if you don’t make contact, it is seen as reckless and endangering the player. The referee’s got that one right and the second one (by Dossena) is a horror challenge, let me tell you.”
Gus Poyet: “Cattermole no, Dossena yes (red cards). I would love the ref to talk. If I was a pundit working today – and I was during the summer when I was out of work – I would ask the technical people to show the tackle on Westwood that nearly cut his head off, the one on Adam Johnson (by Robbie Brady) and the one from Lee Cattermole and let the pundits comment on them. They need to comment on all the tackles. I’m not accusing McShane at all: I think he played the ball and he was late but he nearly killed him and he is injured and he is out and I need to change my goalkeeper. The tackle of Lee didn’t touch him (Elmohammady). He was still on the pitch and he was down for two minutes, there’s a little bit of a difference. Maybe I’m from another planet, I don’t know.”

Steve Clarke: “We are in negotiations with Saido’s representatives and if I was the club, I would get it done as soon as possible. He has had a good season, and long may it continue. It is hard for me if you (the media) want to write about (Berahino going to the World Cup). All I would say is that he is a young boy that, a few weeks ago, nobody was talking about. You have to keep the level of expectation down. In this country we are too quick to push people forward as the next big thing.”“For Saido, the most important thing is that he continues to develop as a player. My own personal opinion is that he is not quite ready for full international football. It is not for me to tell Roy (Hodgson, the England manager) how to do his job, but that is my personal opinion. People are trying to push him too far too quickly. Give the boy time to grow and develop.”
Keith Millen: “It is not an easy situation, with all the speculation about when the manager is going to come in and who it will be. The players have been focused – I don’t think you can accuse them of not concentrating on the job in hand. But it is a tough time for everyone at the club really. The chairman is not going to rush into it. He needs to appoint the right person. But I think the sooner someone does come in, the better – then there will be new ideas, a fresh voice and hopefully a little bit of luck maybe that I don’t think we are getting at the moment. Then things can change.”
