However, it was golf that captured his heart, and he demonstrated a natural talent for the game at an early age. At 17 years old, he became the youngest Alabama State Amateur champion, setting a record of 24-under par.

As a freshman at Vanderbilt University, he won the NCAA National Championship in a playoff. In 2023, Sargent received a special invitation to compete in the Masters Tournament, becoming the No. 2 ranked amateur in the world. Sargent made his professional debut at The Masters in April 2023, finishing with a score of +9, missing the cut by six shots. He has advanced through the U.S. Open Final Qualifying and will compete in the 2024 U.S. Open at the North Course of the Los Angeles Country Club. Sargent has had a record-breaking sophomore season at Vanderbilt, topping the program record for most individual victories with five collegiate wins in his first two years. He added three individual titles in his sophomore season and earned the 2022-23 Men's College Golf Player of the Year award.
