
The Indianapolis 500 is an American open-wheel car race held on Memorial Day weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is 500 miles (805 km) long and consists of 200 laps. The circuit of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the IndyCar series has a length of 2.5 mi (4.0 km), has four turns, and uses an Asphalt surface. The race was initially known and advertised as the “Indianapolis 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race, from 1911 to 1916. Later on, it became known as the “Indianapolis 500” or “the 500”. Before World War I, the race was known as the “Liberty Sweepstakes.” Then, from 1920 to 1980, it was referred to as the “International Sweepstakes”. After World War II, the race was commonly known as “The 500”, “The 500-Mile Race”, “Indianapolis 500”, and “Indy 500”.
Indianapolis 500 Winners
The racetrack's first race was held on May 30, 1911, and was won by Ray Harroun, driving for the Nordyke and Marmon Company. The race saw 40 contestants and attracted a whopping 80 thousand spectators; however, in 1912, the participants were limited to 33. Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing won the event in 2025.
