Pitch Report
This pitch is quite hard. There are a few cracks running vertically down the surface. There is some green grass too. The ball should go through nicely and it does look a good deck for batting if you apply yourself.

So that will be all from this one-day series. But it's time to move into the next phase of India's tour of Australia with a 5-match T20I rubber commencing in the capital city of Canberra on Wednesday, October 29. Suryakumar Yadav will be back at the helm of affairs with Jasprit Bumrah also returning after a brief break. Two power-packed sides with match-winners aplenty and that promises to be a cracking set of games in the build-up to the T20 World Cup in early 2026. Do ensure to catch our coverage of the opener with the first ball to be bowled at 1:45 PM IST. In the meantime, do switch tabs and follow our coverage of the Women's World Cup clash between Australia and South Africa with the winner set to face India in the semis. Until next time, this is the duo of Pradeep Somashekar and Sooryanarayanan Sesha taking your leave. Thank you so much for tuning in. Have a happy weekend - buh-bye and take care!
And of course, there was a raucous cheer when Virat Kohli raised his fifty as well. Here's a watch!👇
We began in Perth six days ago and that was all about Australia in a truncated game. Adelaide was more even, but Australia were largely dominant again as they wrapped up the series. They threatened to post a massive score today but it was India who had the final say with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli hogging the headlines with a majestic partnership. There are some concerns for India, but the fact that their senior statesmen stepped up today will please them to bits. As for Australia, they will be pleased with the series win with their team undergoing a transition. All is not sorted just yet, but they have taken some defining steps.
The moment when Rohit Sharma got to a hundred sure was a heartwarming one. Here's a watch as he embraced Virat Kohli upon reaching the landmark!👇
Mitchell Marsh collects the series trophy and then joins his teams behind the WINNERS board. Confetti in the background as Australia take the series 2-1. They will be disappointed with proceedings today but as the skipper mentioned, to get the job done against a strong Indian side with a game to spare is something they can be proud of.
Mitchell Marsh (Australia captain): We've seen Rohit and Virat do that for the last ten years to a lot of teams. Big experience for our guys and India were too good today. We probably needed one more partnership towards the back end there. We had a great platform but we weren't able to execute. That's okay. As I said, India were too good with the bat. I think the more experienced guys came in and guys like Matt Renshaw, Matthew Short, Cooper Connolly, they did well. India are the number 1 team in the world and to get the job done in the first two games is great. We should be proud as a team.
Shubman Gill (India captain): We almost had a perfect day. They got off to a good start but the way we pulled it back in the middle-overs and the chase was great to see. Firstly how our spinners contained the middle-overs and then the fast-bowlers took those crucial wickets. Harshit is someone who has come in and bowled fast for us in the middle-overs. On such pitches we need bowlers like him. (On Rohit and Virat) They've been doing it for so many years. Such a delight to watch them both back, especially finishing the innings. (First win as ODI captain) Special feeling - good win for us here at a special ground.
Rohit Sharma is the Player of the Match (121* runs) and Player of the Series (202 runs)! Here's what he has to say: "You always expect challenging conditions when you come to Australia — the pitches are testing and the bowlers are top quality, so you have to read the game well and give it your best. I hadn’t played for a while before this, so the preparation was important and I did feel a bit more confident coming into the series. We couldn’t win the series, but there are definitely positives to take away. It’s a young group, and there are valuable lessons in this tour for them. When I first came into the team, the seniors guided us — now it’s our responsibility to do the same. Playing overseas is never easy, especially here, so sharing experience and helping the younger players build their game plans is crucial. Even after so many years, I always return to the basics when playing in Australia. I’ve always enjoyed playing here — especially at the SCG, where I’ve had some good memories. It’s a wonderful venue with a fantastic crowd. I love being out there doing what I do, and I hope to keep going for as long as I can"
Time for the presentation...
Virat Kohli: "The game keeps teaching you, no matter how long you’ve played. When things don’t go your way, that’s when the challenge really kicks in — and I enjoy those moments. Batting with Rohit always makes things easier, and I’m happy we could finish the game together. Right from the start, we assessed the conditions well, and that’s what leads to consistency and success. This understanding between us goes way back — even in 2013 during that ODI series against Australia. We always knew that if the two of us batted for 20 overs, the match would swing heavily in our favour — and the opposition knew it too. We’ve always loved playing here; some of our best cricket has come in this country. And the support has been brilliant — thank you all so much."
Rohit Sharma: "I’ve always loved coming here and playing in Australia — it brings back some really special memories, especially from 2008. Not sure if we’ll get another chance to tour here, but we’ve cherished every moment. For us, it’s always been about enjoying the game, regardless of the records or accolades. We started afresh in Perth, and that’s how I like to approach things — one match, one challenge at a time."
9:11 PM local time (3:41 PM IST): India beat Australia by 9 wickets; Australia take the 3-match series 2-1.
It's not as though these two players were away for too long. But four and a half months does feel a long time and that's why it felt as though we were a part of a time machine and took a nice trip down memory lane witnessing this majestic partnership. An unbeaten stand of 168, their first 100+ partnership since 2020 - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have given countless Indian fans inside and outside the Sydney Cricket Ground a memorable game to talk about for a long time to come.
Of course, the series is done and India have managed a consolation win. 237 is all they had to chase on the back of a splendid bowling display led by Harshit Rana and while there was some movement upfront with the new ball, both Rohit and skipper Shubman Gill negated it well before cashing in on the loose ones. Rohit did play a lot of dots initially but he never looked out of control - he picked his moments and saw out the good deliveries before easing his way into his innings, as Gill timed the ball pretty well himself once again. The duo raced along after a point and Nathan Ellis in particular was put to the sword, even as Josh Hazlewood was impeccable again.
Hazlewood got Gill nicking off before Kohli joined Rohit as a largely Indian crowd at the SCG erupted. Kohli cheekily celebrated his first run of the series but clearly looked in better rhythm with his footwork on cue. Rohit continued to pick out the fence as he went past fifty for the second successive game, and he countered Adam Zampa in some style, rotating strike well while also deploying the sweep in particular to great effect. Kohli brought out his wristy flicks at will but an off-drive off Mitchell Starc was one of the shots of the day.
The duo entertained the SCG even as the Australian shoulders dropped with the hosts seemingly resigning to their fate. With Shreyas Iyer heading to the hospital after a rib injury he picked up on the field, it was imperative that Rohit and Kohli saw the team home. And so they did without breaking a sweat as Rohit brought up his 50th international ton before Kohli got the job done with a nonchalant upper-cut - well after he raised his own half-century!
Australia were completely outplayed and their bowlers just went through the motions after a point. But tonight belonged to two of India's finest. Two seasoned veterans, two players with plenty of white noise around them, but two players who proved yet again that they have plenty left in the tank and that class is well and truly permanent. They seemed to enjoy themselves in the middle and after a point, that's what the sport becomes all about. And today is a memory that will live on in the minds of countless Indian supporters for a long, long time to come, even as the series hasn't gone the team's way.
It's a ramp from Kohli that finishes things off! Not sure how many of those we've seen from him but how about that to finish the game! Rohit and Kohli hug and grin - this is a partnership they will remember for a long, long time. India win by 9 wickets with a whopping 69 deliveries to spare!
38.3 Nathan Ellis to Virat Kohli, THAT'S IT! FOUR! Kohli and Rohit take India over the line, ends the series on a high at 2-1! Banged in short outside the off-stump, Kohli ramps it over the keeper's head and the third-man fielder can't get around in time.
4 runs to win...
38.2 Nathan Ellis to Rohit Sharma, low full toss on the stumps. Rohit flicked it to deep mid-wicket for another single.
38.1 Nathan Ellis to Virat Kohli, back of a length, angled into the leg-stump. Kohli pushes it to mid-on and picks up a quick single.
