This has been a fine win for the men in black. This is Dwaipayan Mukherjee, signing off alongside Darpan Tikiya. We will see you soon!
Jos Buttler (Player of the Match): "Little bit tricky and slow surface. So, had to get a hang of the pace of it. Happy to win. I thought Thomas Aspinwell did really well. It is frustrating that we put in our best performance after the tournament had already been done. Ravindra is exceptionally quick. Any time a bowler strays, he is quick to cash upon. It has been fun batting with him. Left-right combination helps. We did not play our best cricket. So, in a way, we deserve to be in the bottom half of the points table. But today showed what we are capable of."
9:00 PM local time, 1:30 AM IST : Manchester Originals (140 for 3) defeat Northern Superchargers (139 for 8) by 7 wickets
Jos Buttler - 70 (38) | Jacob Duffy - 1/16 Rachin Ravindra - 47* (23) | Tom Lawes - 1/20
Adil Rashid concedes his most expensive spell in the history of the competition. Jos Buttler and Ravindra steal the show tonight!
Potts and Duffy kept it tight at the start. McKinney was the first to fall as scoring opportunities were scarce. It was some wonderful bowling upfront. Plenty of movement off the deck for the pacers as the fielders backed up the impressive work done by the opening bowling pair, who were the only bowlers in operation throughout the power play, as they sent down 16 dot balls in that phase. Superchargers had faced 38 dot balls in their innings. It is definitely not one of those strips conducive for shot making at the top as this was the lowest power play score at this venue for the season. Also the lowest for the Originals (23 for 1)
Thomas Lawes picked up Phil Salt in his very first ball of the match, pegging back the visitors further. The introduction of Adil Rashid saw a slog into the leg side for a maximum that got the required runs under 100 for the Originals. The right arm leg spin match up worked better for the left handed Rachin Ravindra but that didn't deter Jos Buttler who also struck the leggie for a boundary as Rashid's first 5 balls were put away for 13 runs. Throughout the night, Ravindra kept getting low against Rashid, used his hands to engage in belligerent shots that never allowed Rashid to have an impact in the game.
Halfway through the chase, Buttler was beginning to find his groove. The issue with part-time bowlers like Dan Lawrence is that even though they might become twice the propostion that they are in surfaces like these have offer some grip, they would always send down some loose balls. Butler not only accepted those gifts but also went on to attack other bowlers. That emerged into a whirlwind knock with the able support of the young Kiwi on the other end. Buttler brought up his 50 off only 27 balls. He fancies this opposition, scoring 64 in the reverse fixture in Manchester.
Once the half century milestone was breached, Buttler began approaching the victory line in a contour. After the storm of some noteworthy opening bowling spell, there was little that the home side could do to contain the Buttler avalanche. The magnitude of his knock was such that even though Rachin Ravindra was going great guns with his own batting effort, it was overshadowed by the brilliance of Jos Buttler till the time Rashid knocked him over for a consolation victory. The Headingley crowd applauded profusely as the former English captain walked back.
The Originals end their campaign on a victorious note as Northern Superchargers go back to the drawing board and plan for the eliminator!
16.4 Samit Patel to Rachin Ravindra, BLUDGEONED DOWNTOWN! FOUR! Patel tried to dart this one at the stumps. But Ravindra was prepared. He smacked it straight and the umpire did well to get out of the way. Originals finish their campaign with a win. But it would only make the fans think, "why not sooner?".
16.3 Samit Patel to Rachin Ravindra, LOFTED... FOUR! Full ball hurled outside off from over the wicket. Ravindra unleashed a sumptuous elevated drive over mid-off.
16.2 Samit Patel to Heinrich Klaasen, good length, at the stumps. Klaasen backs away and slashes it towards deep cover for a run.
16.1 Samit Patel to Heinrich Klaasen, darts a yorker at the pads. Klaasen stood with an open stance and in the end, had to jam his bat down to block it.
9 runs needed from 20 balls : Only a couple of big shots away.
16.0
15.5 Adil Rashid to Heinrich Klaasen, fuller, outside off. Driven towards long-off for a single.
Heinrich Klaasen batting at 5th position
Jos Buttler has been dismissed for 70 runs off 37 balls
The magnitude of this knock is such that even though Rachin Ravindra is going great guns with his own batting effort, it is overshadowed by the brilliance of Jos Buttler. Adil Rashid picks him up but we might be scared that it's a little too late for the home side.
15.4 Adil Rashid to Jos Buttler, OUT! BOWLED! Buttler was just trying to have fun now. He flipped to a left-handed stance and brought out the golf swing, only to miss the ball. It was a googly that crashed into the middle pole.
15.3 Adil Rashid to Rachin Ravindra, hurls it on a the shorter side of good length, from around the wicket, to ensure Rachin cannot sweep it. He rather taps it to cover for a run.
15.2 Adil Rashid to Jos Buttler, charges again. Pepper moved off side anticipating a wide one, but Rashid rather darted one at the pads. Flicked to square leg for a single.
Buttler is approaching the victory line in a contour. After the storm of some noteworthy opening bowling spell, there is little that the home side could do to contain the Buttler avalanche now.
15.1 Adil Rashid to Jos Buttler, SMACKED! SIX! Buttler is making it look easy now. Tossed up ball. He charged and whacked it over long-off.
15.0
14.5 Thomas Lawes to Jos Buttler, good length delivery at the stumps. Buttler dabbed it back into the pitch and wandered down searching for a run. Hence, Lawes sprinted to tackle the ball and kicked it onto the stumps. But before that the batter was back, courtesy of a big dive.
